My weight loss journey

Recommended Posts

Oct. 6,2016

I weighed in at 179. I'm 5'6". BMI OF 29.

I'm diabetic and have high blood pressure. I was having complications due to diabetic neuropathy in my stomach. Before it could get to the point of needing a pacemaker I made the decision to have gastric sleeve surgery. This would illuminate or reduce the severity of my diabetes.

I've only lost 20 lbs in 3 months time. I'm disappointed as I still have 20 lbs left to lose and can't seem to lose any more.

I'm also losing a ton of hair.

Can someone out there tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'm also exercising like never before.

20 lbs over 3 months is 1.6 pounds a week. That's pretty good weight loss.

If you weren't losing anything or gaining weight you could be concerned.

My suggestion is to track everything you put in your mouth... Use the App MyFitnessPal and make sure you're around the calorie intake that your nutritionist has set for you.

Otherwise, 20 pounds in 3 months is decent weight loss for someone.

Lastly, as I've found, there's time when you will slow down and not lose for a week or two at at time. With the sleeve, this is exactly the way things go and are expected as your body adjusts to the new stomach you have.

I feel your frustration. I too lost much less than I expected, 30 lbs in 3 months. I am also diabetic with several other co-morbidities.

What I can tell you is to measure other achievements and be patient. How are you clothes fitting, have you eliminated or reduced any medications, how do you feel?

These are the questions put to me. And if these things are improving, just stay the course.

My doctors, including my primary doctor express excitement in my progress and tell me I am being too hard on myself. My bariatric doctor said that his diabetic patients lose at a slower pace and not as much as others. I was disappointed, but it helped me to know this.

My dietitian told me that some lose fast at the beginning others are slow and steady. You'll have stalls, but if you just stay on plan you will lose.

Also, I keep a food diary with my fitness tracker and that helps by reminding me that I sometimes eat little things that that add up.

I haven't had the hair loss too badly. But I am encouraged by others on this site to keep up the Protein intake. That equals hair.

Gook luck to you. Hold on!

Thank you for the encouragement. I have been medication free for 4 months now, but still have to watch my carbs and sugar intake.

That is great! Are you tracking everything you eat? I have noticed that I can't eat the same number of calories every day. It all depends on what I do.

The fitness tracker helps me with this. I would freak out when I was in the "red zone" on food intake. Then I learned if as I added more activity the zone would improve.

So if you're not tracking try it.

I have FitBit Alta, which does the things I mentioned. There are multiple levels and price ranges

WebMD has a free online that hels you track food and activity, but it doesn't link the intake ad output like FitBit.

I see a Fitness category on this home page, that may lend some guidance.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
