Redmaxx 740 Posted February 9, 2017 When and how did you know that you no longer needed your CPAP? Since my surgery I have had a ton of energy (had the pressure lowered due to dry mouth) but for the last week or so I feel tired during the day. I am just wondering if maybe I don't need my CPAP anymore? I have an appointment with my sleep doctor on 23 March and I know he had talked about doing a sleep study since I haven't had one done in about 7 years or so. 1 1234567890 reacted to this
RJC5197 282 Posted February 9, 2017 I stopped about 4 weeks after surgery. I hated it anyway, and kept trying to sleep without it, till I no longer was snoring or getting poor sleep due to breathing. Everyone is different, based on the severity of their issues. My son still needs it, even after loosing 80 lbs.
danaymacklin 177 Posted February 9, 2017 I stopped mine a week after surgery and have been fine but going to ask my surgeon about it on the 14th to see what he has to say. My husband says I'm not snoring so life is good:)Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App 1 Redmaxx reacted to this
Martha Parker-mcneal 166 Posted February 9, 2017 have someone moniter your snoring or stopping breathing during sleep. have the sleep study. often as we lose weight the fat in our necks also reduces and most of the time folks can stop the machines. Im not a dr but I have heard that we should not stop them on our own as the poor breathing and poor sleep can lead to heart problems down the line. good luck to you 1 Redmaxx reacted to this
Montana Girl 7 Posted February 19, 2017 I think the textbook correct answer would be to have another sleep study. Wait until your weight loss has been at least to the point you were when you were diagnosed (or first became symptomatic) with OSA. It's an expensive study so you don't want to do it too soon. When your numbers normalize without CPAP, you can be sure you may safely discontinue.
sleevinpops 303 Posted February 19, 2017 My doctor scheduled another sleep study 45 days after surgery. It it is clear, I can stop using.
LivsMum 9 Posted February 20, 2017 My pulmonary doctor told me to call and schedule a sleep study after a 50 lbs loss. I started with about 115lbs of excess weight.
QuilterGal 216 Posted February 27, 2017 I love my CPAP. I probably don't need it anymore, but it's become a safety blanket for me.
Redmaxx 740 Posted February 28, 2017 I know they have to lower the pressure (again) as my mouth is really dry in the morning. I also need to see about getting something different in terms of a mask. I have to pull the straps pretty tight so that it doesn't leak and now the bridge of my nose hurts. If I have to keep using it maybe I need to look into getting a nasal pillow. We will have to see what the doctor says later this month.
