feeling like food is stuck in my throat

Recommended Posts

I'm 15 days post op. Everything I eat and drink feels like it's stuck in my throat. It only last a few mins. Even when I drink Water. I'm having trouble taking all my Vitamins. Is this normal? I eat and drink slowly so I don't think I'm over doing that. I also had hiatal hernia surgery the same time as my sleeve.

I was having the same problem and talked with nutritionist and surgeon's nurse. Eating faster than I thought so I timed myself and put at least 2-3 mins between bites and smaller bites/sips. I take Miralax in 8 oz of beverage every morning (fiber) to keep me pooping. Protein is very constipating. Upped my Pepcid from 1 to 2 times a day and got some simethicone tablets for GAS. These are chewable and help a lot. Things have improved for me considerably. The constriction/pain with eating/drinking went on for me for 3 weeks until I called the doctor's office for advice. I highly recommend you do the same. They are there to help us but we have to call to initiate the help. Good luck to you and hope things smooth out for you!

I felt like there was an alien controlling my body between the back of my throat and the bottom of my stomach for the first 12 weeks or so. It was a mystery and I'm sorry you are going through it as well, but it does heal. I hated swallowing for that entire time. But now I've leveled out to my new normal. I'm 4 months post op.

Thanks. Hopefully it will get better with time. I was able to eat some soft peaches today with no problem but still having trouble with or foods, liquids and my meds. Glad I'm not the only one

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
