PCP is not on board anymore

Recommended Posts

So today I went to see my PCP to sign my letter of reccomendation for surgery and she flipped the script on me. When I started the process in October she was on board with everything. She was aware of everything needed to be done and said the letter isn't a problem. Gave me the letter in writing, I just needed to type it.

Today she tells me she's not sure if it's a good idea due to my chronic skin condition that I have (hidradenitis suppurativa). Said she mentioned it to a dermatologist I also see in her office and they both are against it now. Excuse my language but what type of shit is that??? I go in for my last weigh in and nutrition appointment next wk. Not even sure what to do now.

From what little I've read, obesity exacerbates the condition so why wouldn't surgery be a good idea?!

Same thing I've heard but she said they are afraid due to the stage I'm in it could be in my bloodstream and cause problems. Doesn't make sense because the dermatologist said I should get surgery on the areas with him. Doesn't make sense

That's confusing and so frustrating I'm sure. Maybe your surgeon could talk to them?

She's suppose to be calling the bariatric surgeon tomorrow morning. I just hate that this changed all of a sudden, everything was smooth sailing but now this.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that. I wouldn't back down if I were you. You've come so far. I'd do my research & take it to both physicians & show why the surgery is beneficial towards your condition. Let them know how badly you need this! Best wishes ????

I too have HS and my dermatologist was the first person to recommend. She did mention that sometimes it can cause flares but once you level off the HS can go fully into remission. Considering I've been on humira for the last year even a decrease in flares sounds amazing! Hopefully once all the Drs talk they will get on the same page. I'm so sorry :( I'm only on my second class but I'd be super upset if this happened to me. Keep pushing!!

Is it too late to get a second opinion? Is it possible to see another doc/dermatologist?

Yes only because I am suppose to have everything by next wk so my papers can be sent to my insurance for approval. If I dont get a call back tomorrow I'll call the weight loss office and see if I just add extra months for my weigh ins and look for another PCP

That's the main reason why I'm getting the surgery for remission of my HS. I can't do anything as far as working out because it's so bad. Still waiting for a call from someone. So we'll see.

Hi Ronnie are you doing tge 6mos diet for insurance approval? Also does you insurance require a letter from your PCP? Im asking because Im also doing a 6mos diet for approval, and I finished my 5 appt yesterday and they said after my next appt thats it. They will send paperwork for approval. I was told a letter from your PCP is good but not a requirement. I have BCBS Anthem

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
