Protein intake, struggling

Recommended Posts

I cannot do shakes, the texture and the flavor are awful and I've tried them all.

I now drink Atkins Lift Protein drinks. They are thin, like a flavored Water and the taste isn't bad at all. Lemon is my fave. I discovered these about 4wks out. Im 6wks out, I drink two a day and get the rest from food (soft solid diet) I average 90-100 Protein a day!

I will have my surgery on the 13th of February but, I have found a Protein mix called GENEPRO. 1 tablespoon is 30grams and I mix it with my coffe. My sister had her surgery in October and she started using this as well and mixes it with an ounce of Gatorade and takes like a shot .. hope this helps you..

Does she mix it with like 8 ounces and drinks it? Don't with that portion of protein for the day? I just find that even the unflavored has flavor. I'm struggling with getting liquids down.

My MD says absolutely no genpro says patients that use it don't lose the weight.
He's done studies.

I and a number of people in my support group from all over the US use GENEPRO and have done very well with it. I've lost 83 lbs and am 29 from goal. And individual MDs rarely do 'studies'; they may look at their patients observationally and see trends but using GENEPRO vs some other brand of Protein is not preventing people from losing weight. Not following an intelligent eating plan is what keeps people from losing weight.

I'm just saying what my MD said that he did. There are other forums on here against genpro as well. For me I'm gonna follow my MD's advice.

Two Premier Protein drinks and you've met your goal for the day. It's my opinion this is by far the easiest way to get the Protein in.

I agree if it wasn't for these items would only hit 40-50. They also taste the best to me.

My NUT recommended putting powdered milk in Soups, etc. to add Protein. I haven't tried it because I'm ok with Protein Shakes. Maybe you could try that. I also get a lot of protein (15 g) from eating a small container of Muuna cottage cheese.

I found a Protein isolate on amazin for like 35 bucks. It's a powder but mix it with Water and it has the consistency of Water and is very easy to get it all in. It's 1 scoop 20oz water for 20 grams. I have 2 bottles a day and get my Protein. And it tastes pretty darn good kinda like a crystal light berry flavor. I'm 2 weeks out

If you do find put, if its not trouble can you let me know ? GENEPRO just seems like a perfect solution for someone like mex i really struggle with protien shakes no matter how much i try i will even get nauseous at times trying to force myself to drink lol . Thanks again

I was a hard core GenePro fan up until today. :( I mix it with my coffee every morning. I've heard people saying that you don't get the full 30mg... it's more like 15mg but that's okay with me since it's so early in the day. I had my 5 month checkup today. my nutritionist had never heard of this brand. She looked it up while we were in the office and said it looked fine. But later in the day she sent me this message.(see below). So I guess it's not what we should be on. I'm going to switch over to Unjury, hopefully that brand mixes well into liquids. Btw it hasn't stopped me from losing weight. SW-235 CW-179 five months post op.

"Hi Jessica,

We met today and you mentioned you use Genepro as your Protein supplement. That is actually not a supplement we recommend. Our bariatrician found no independent analysis to support the protein they claim to use: "instantized peptide whey, hydrolyzed whey and genetic hexapeptide protein."

I encourage you to switch to another type of protein, for example Unjury or Isopure which both offer unflavored powders.

Thank you,
Karen Garcia-Herrera, MS, RD

I just spoke with my NUT and she said the following about GENEPRO "We do not recommend Genepro. It's not possible to have 30g of Protein in 1T of Protein Powder. They have been sued for false advertising"

Thanks Nancy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
