Sleeping and recliners

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery on June 14, I had read about people needing to sleep in a recliner for the first week or so due to pain or the inability to get comfortable. I am stricktly a stomach and side sleeper. How many of you needed to sleep in a recliner? I'm considering buying one for my recovery.

It's hard to predict what you will feel like. I had no pain, never had to take any pain medication and had no problem sleeping on my side from day one. I was pretty bloated from surgical swelling, though, so it was about two weeks before I felt comfortable laying flat on my stomach.

Difficult to gage how you will be after the surgery. Im a side sleeper but had to lay on my back for ten nights before I could lay on my side. I bought a riser recliner for my recent plastic surgery and I sleep in that. Its the best thing I have ever bought!

I am strictly a side sleeper myself. I had very minimal pain from my sleeve surgery itself. What hurt most for me was my back from laying on it for so long after the surgery. I have chronic back pain, so laying on it during the surgery and the 2 nights after were hell on my back. But my surgery site itself was very minimal in regard to the amount of pain I had. I did sleep in my recliner the first night home, but it was mostly due to the fact that I was a bit scared of climbing my stairs. But by the second night, I think it was hurting my back worse to sleep in my recliner, so I decided to go to my bed. The stairs weren't bad at all, and I didn't have any problem sleeping on my side.

I also have back problems. I mostly have problems with stiffness and pain. If I stay in bed too long, it gets worse. I'm hoping it won't be an issue. Thank you for your response. And good luck.

I'm a tummy sleeper and the first week of sleep was difficult but pain meds helped. I slept on a big club chair for the first three nights. Then on my back for about three weeks. Messed up my back pretty bad. I then could sleep on my side with a pillow supporting my tummy. Around a month out I could gently roll to my tummy.

Ugh. I KNOW sleeping on my back wpuld be horrible for me. I might just get a recliner in case. We can always use more seating in my house anyway lol

My surgery was Jan 30th I'm

A stomach sleeper so thought it would be difficult. First couple nights home I slept propped up in bed with lots of pillows then I just move to couch and prop up with pillows . Last night was first night I was able to sleep on my side. No pain meds since I've been home plus had gallbladder removed . Was much easier than I expected .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
