Sushi and Sashimi

Recommended Posts

I absolutely love sushi but I know some people have a hard time with rice and seaweed. I have never tried sashimi but I bet that would go down easier. What are some of your favorite types of sashimi or sushi that is easy to eat with the band?

Rice makes me uncomfortably full so I've being going with the sashimi. As long as I stick with "fishy" meats (no squid, eel, etc.) I've had no problems. My current favorite is core yellowfin. Dry it off, slice it up, dash it with soy, and then combine soy, ginger (ground, not pickled - can't stand pickled) and wasabi in a ramiken. YUM! It's a superb lean Protein, chews up with no effort, and always goes down easy.

I've had the normal rolled up things with rice & seaweed.

I chew it longer than I use to, but so far no problems.

I love Sushi, and was very concerned I wouldn't be able to have it. I tried it for the first time last week, since being filled. I did chew it longer, and it passed ok. However, chewing it longer kind of turned me off some of the different fish. Salmon used to me my favourite, but it made me almost nausious (sp?). The rolls went down much better. tuna worked fine. I didn't even try the squid out of fear. So I'm afraid I might "naturally" move away from Sushi... very sad.

I agree with that.. I was going to keep that to myself, since more people seem to like fish around here than I do..

But chewing the rolls doesn't taste quite as good as it use to when you have to keep it in the mouth so long..

I love sushi. In fact, I am going to say that it is my favorite food. Before banding, I used to go to all you could eat joints. For $20 you could eat all the sushi you could for one hour.

Anymore, I enjoy a little sushi a la carte. Seaweed wrap can give me problems, and so can rice. I like sushi that has a lot of sauce. If you go to a good place you should be able to find all kinds of great stuff.

My favorite place has a few rolls that are covered with sauces. The great thing about the band is that it helps me slow down and enjoy a $10 sushi roll, rather than scarf it down like some McNasty burger.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
