I have to bring my husband and my children. Age 12 and 14 to my surgery. I feel sad that they have to see this all. Feel embarrassed and weak that I am having this done. I feel like they are going to think there's a cure for being severely overweight and eating awful and being lazy. How do you cope with this? I want my kids to be healthy. Not just see a way out once it happens. They are both chubby. Specially my daughter :-(((((

Model appropriate behavior. Let them see how hard mom works at being healthy. They won't think this is easy--no one who understands what we go through can.

Make balanced lunches for everyone. Eat together as a family. Teach them that there are sometimes foods and anytime foods, but make sure your healthy foods are tasty. Make them spaghetti, but use turkey meatballs and legume Pasta. Make them chicken wings, but bake them and buy skinless. Make them pb&j sandwiches with whole grain bread, PB2, and sugar- free jelly.

Exercise together. My kids and I do Tae Kwon Do together. There are several families at the gym who do the same, and they are not all slim by any means. Find something you can all do: martial arts, swimming, skating. But stick to it.

Your kids won't think worse of you. But you do need to teach them how not to end up like us.

You have no reason to be embarrassed. We are doing this for our children. I keep telling myself that I have to succeed. I can't fail because of my daughter. She is the main reason I'm having bypass. She deserves a mother that can actively participate in her life and not sit on the sidelines. I want to teach her a healthy lifestyle. This surgery is the only way I can do that. Your children will be so proud and happy for the new you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
