Snack suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm 5 months post-op and finding myself hungry between meals. So far my snack foods have been rice cakes, sugar free fudge pops, and popsicles. In general I have always had a hard time with Snacks - I never chose healthy ones and always ate too many. I find myself too tempted with the snacks I've been buying.

Other than string cheese, what snacks do people recommend? fruit just seems like sugar, vegetables seem boring (and upset my stomach), Peanut Butter has so many calories...

I get in sufficient Protein with my regular meals, so not looking to eat more bars (already eat 2 a day).

Any suggestions welcome!

I like almonds........but you have to be careful and weigh out just one ounce. It's easy to over eat almonds if I don't do that. But I find them very satisfying. I stay low carb so I don't do the rice cakes and other things you mentioned...... another thing you can try is boiled eggs, or low sodium deli meats. I don't eat any Protein bars or shakes anymore and haven't since I was able to eat normal food. The bars make me feel like I'm eating a candy bar and I just don't want to get into that habit...............Oh! dill pickles are a good snack too!

Something else you may want to try is spacing your regular meals out more........for example if it's the evenings when you are feeling like you need a snack.....try moving your dinner time to an hour later....Just a thought!

Good luck to you!

Take Care,

Kathy

Almonds, hummus, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with a few blueberries. The blueberries have carbs, so I don't eat very many of them. I found a bag of Tyson's frozen fully cooked grilled chicken strips... they're great as a meal or to just have an ounce or so as a high Protein snack. No carbs, low fat and high Protein in the chicken strips.

Dill pickles if you want something crunchy that is low calorie. And parmesan crisps (which I couldn't find at the store today). They are crunchy, high in protein, no carbs and if you just enjoy a few at a time, you won't get your calories too high.

I am staying low carb....I like to cut up sliced cheese and put it in the oven at 400 degrees for about 6 minutes. Yummy! Also, if I feel like I need something crunchy, I will allow myself to eat about 5 Pork rinds. That's very rare, but they don't have any carbs. But they make me very thirsty so I can't eat very many since I can't eat and drink at the same time.

I love cutting up a half a banana, chopping up just a few raw mixed nuts and drizzling some almond butter over it. You can even add a sprinkle of cinnamon. All clean eating foods and very satisfying of you have a sweet craving

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
