So I'm 12 days post op. I don't get the feeling of being full. I just listen to my body. My heart starts pounding little faster so I stop eating. I'm afraid I'm going to stretch out my stomach or hurt my stitches. I'm healthy other then being overweight. Also I'm able to drink more then just sip. I found this out by taking a antibiotic. The pill was relatively big and I need a lot of Water to get it down. I feel think I'm being phyiced out from having the lap band for so long. Feeling like I'm going to take a drink and it get stuck or take forever to go down. With the sleeve it just goes down. No problems but I cant feel the feeling of being full like I feel like I could just chug but I don't. I take multiple sips at a time and slowly swallow. Little by little. Anyone else? I know I cant be only one.

Try to relax. You will not stretch your sleeve with liquids. You will not feel any restriction until you start eating solid foods. I promise you will feel restriction once you are able to move to solids. And don't worry about being able to drink a lot........actually be very thankful for that!

You're doing great! Keep up the good work!

Take Care,

Kathy

You aren't able to feel full yet because the nerves responsible for that sensation have been severed and need time to grow back. In the meantime, measure and track your food. It's the only way to know for sure that you're not eating too much or too little.

Meeting your Fluid goal is critical. If drinking doesn't cause you discomfort, it is a blessing as far as getting to your daily intake.

I'm my opinion it's mostly a mental thing. Before the VSG I would eat until I'm stuffed so now waiting to feel full is so different. You took a pill? My Dr didn't allow me any pills that didn't dissolve.

Yeah I went to the ER for an incision and he said it looked infected. Its not. I took it that one time and went to see my doctor next morning he said don't take it. Only thing its going to do is cause me to have an upset tummy due to being a antibiotic. In the hospital after surgery they were giving me colace pills for Constipation. I was afraid to swallow them so I didnt take them.. Now I take gasX pill almost daily. No problems. Its crazy how different every doctor is. I'm trying to not worry about it but that's like telling a fish not to swim. Trying not to let the emotions get to me and just stay positive.

The second you say don't think about pink elephants, you can't get them out of your mind. You need to distract yourself. Read a book, go to the movies, or for a walk. Something that will get your mind to a different place.

I was so glad I was able to drink a lot after the first few days. I loved drinking lots of Water pre op and was worried I wouldn't be able to afterwards. You are very lucky, as was I, to be able to get all your fluids in without issues so early on.

Congraulations on the surgery !

Kate

You just might not recognize your full feeling. Mine is indigestion. I get a burning sensation in the back of my throat with both food and liquid and I know I need to stop. My stomach doesnt hurt nor do I feel stuffed. So now, when it gets close to that feeling I know to push them away.

My heart starts beating faster. I'm guessing that's my full feeling because then I stop. Like my body is working overtime to get it digested. I'm still recovering so well see what its like in the future.

OMG, thank you for this comment! I'm 9 days out and I've been driving myself crazy because everyone says not to count calories, just try to meet liquid and Protein goals and stop when you are full. But I never feel full! I ate 900 calories yesterday and even tried some cheese (tiny bites - very well chewed - applesauce consistency) since people keep saying I'll feel full once I'm on solids.

I track every single thing I eat or drink: calories, liquids, Protein, fat, sugars, Fiber, other carbs; but I don't know how many calories is enough and how many is too many. My surgeon says not to count calories, but I'm going to have to set a limit somewhere or all of this pain will be for nothing.

I'm 19 days post op and the liquids are going great but pureed/soft, just started soft today, is a bit tougher. I'm getting better at recognizing being full before I'm too full. It doesn't take but 2oz/4TBS of food to feel this way. I get heartburn every evening about 7pm or so. I just chew a Rolaids and it goes away. It is difficult for me to eat but hopefully with time that will get easier. Anyone have any suggestions? I really love this site and all of you going through the same thing. It really does help me to not feel alone! Thanks to all of you!

Hi Diva,

Having heartburn every evening is not normal and not something you should have to deal with. Did your doctor prescribe a PPI? If not you probably should call them and ask for one. My doctor had me on 40mg a day of Omeprazole for the first 6 months after surgery. You can also buy it over the counter at 20mg.....but for me it was cheaper at the prescription level because my insurance paid for it. :-)

Everything else you mentioned sounds very normal. The 2oz of pureed food for a meal is about the same amount I could eat at that stage. I'm a little over 8 months post op now and of course on normal food......I will usually put about 3oz of a Protein like chicken breast on my plate and a spoon full of non-starchy veggies.....Very seldom do I ever get to the veggie and a lot of times don't make it through all of the protein. If I have something that has more liquid in it like chili I'm able to eat about a 4oz bowl.

Good luck to you! It sounds like you're doing great!

Take Care,

Kathy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
