Severely Missing Food

Recommended Posts

I'm right there with you. I know it's mental and I know in no time I'll be able to eat with my family and friends but I feel so excluded lately. I'm 2 weeks out but did liquids for 2 weeks prior to surgery so I haven't been eating for a month now and it's just wearing on me psychologically. I don't even have a craving for anything and I've felt full the whole time since surgery... Can barely get anything down because I'm always full... Dr says I have a lot of swelling so that's why. I just miss the social aspect.... And people at work are always making comments about me not eating which makes me feel worse about it. My coworkers are huge foodies and usually order food everyday and have big lunches and they've always got donuts our some baked goods someone made and brought in. I was worried all that temptation would kill me but honestly,i don't want any of that.... It's amazing. At home it's a little easier... My kids don't fully understand although they've been as supportive as possible at ages 7 and 9. Sorry, just kind of rambling but it's been a rough day and I don't have anyone to talk to who understands.

The other thing is comments from my friends and coworkers basically saying I can never eat certain things again. I will physically be able to eat most anything in small amounts, I probably won't eat anything like I used to, but why is that a bad thing?! That's what got me into this situation in the first place.

Lots of food and gross bad food like McDonald's is what got us here in the first place. It's an addiction and normal to feel like you miss it. But post surgery the hormone that tells your brain to eat is gone. So what we are experiencing is head hunger and acid reflux that can make you think hunger.

I'm one month post op and sometimes get so sad because I can't eat what the rest of the family is eating. But then I remind myself of how BAD real bad that crap is. I move my thinking to how good I'm going to feel and look and how already I am more focused and losing weight during this recovery of surgery. I'm starting back at the gym this week and looking forward to toning up.

It's just a matter of time for us to heal from this major surgery! We had a portion of a bodily organ taken out of us. Let's heal.

But I know it's hard. It's real hard. Focus on present moment and try to stay busy during those moments of "I'm hungry and want pizza" phase. It will pass!

Good luck all. I'm with ya!

You are not alone!! I know exactly how you feel. I'm only 6 days post op. My healing process and liquid diet are going well but I have 2 kids that I have to cook for. So I'm still around food that I can't have. This morning fixing eggs n sausage my mouth was watering because I just wanted one bite. But I have been really strong and I can resist the temptation because I know I have to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
