Contact Sports?

Recommended Posts

I have always had a very active life, with many interest.

I ride motocross, play football with my boys, basket ball, lots of camping and general rough housing with the kids

all of this has been dramatically effected by my weight in the last year which is one of the main reasons I am getting banded.

So the question band vets are there concerns with these types of activities? Mainly I worry about the port and the possibility of impact in that area

BTW I'm scheduled for oct. 1

I am wondering the same question. I used to play rugby, and now that I am getting close to my goal weight I am interested in playing on a "masters" team (boy do I feel old).

I am concerned about hits to the port area though

I work right now as a Correctional Officer in Ft. Bend County, Texas, and soon I will be a patrol deputy. I fight inmates all the time, and haven't had any problems. I've even been punched right in the band, and that is about as much contact as you can get. So far so good! Pretty soon I'll be back to riding bulls, so I will let you all know how that works out as well :)

I don't know about contact sports but i do ride off road motorcycle often. I wasn't sure how it was going work. I got banded on august 27 2007 and have rode since 4 weeks after. I have been trying to get 70 miles+ a week since. At first my stomack/kidney area hurt but i believe that was because of no kidney belt. I thought they didn't make them in a big enough size. I found one made by thor that fits. I was in a 50 mile XC race a week ago and had no problems. It is amazing how much better the bike handles after losing 60 pounds. I signed up to race in a XC series that starts in march so my goal is another 60 ponds down by then.:D So in conclusion go rip it up on your dirt bike and have a good time:bandit

Hey Boomer... Isn't Ft. Bend County about to add on to their prison? I work for the company (Lowe Precast, Inc.) that is making the concrete walls for that facility. We are just getting ready to submit to the General Contractor for approval on our drawings. Pretty small world isn't it?

Sports was a concern of mine as well... after reading this I'll not worry too much about wuss sports like softball and flag football. :)

Man... here is a contact sport to stay away from for a while after surgery.

Fatherhood!

Day 4 post op, I was getting my almost 3 yr. old son dressed for church and he was squirmy. While attempting to apply the sock to a rapidly evasive foot... said foot whacked me full force right in my 3 inch port incision!!! :)

That made things sore for quite a while! Took some hydrocodone and had a good time at church... :omg:

I am so glad that I found this post. I'm a law enforcement officer about to get banded but was having second thoughts because of the potential risks involved about being struck in the band area. The doctor told me it wouldn't be a problem but some confirmation is nice.

Hey Guys! Sorry to intrude on the manly posts but I have some answers for yall regarding the heavy stuff. I compete in both BJJ and MMA. My surgeon says that I'll be able to take direct shots to the port w/ just alittle discomfort after 4-6 weeks. Which is good b/c they're both a huge part of my life. For awhile I was going to cancel the surgery bc I was so worried about complications if I got hit. Now the only problem Im thinking about is dropping weight classes for competitions! Good luck guys!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
