How many calories 5 months post op?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I'm wondering how many calories one should be eating about 5 months post-op. Up until now I've been eating around 600-850 calories a day but these past few days I've been eating closer to 900 which is scaring me a bit because I don't know if this is too much. At my 3 month follow up appointment my NUT told me I should be eating 1000-1200 calories which seems way too high for someone only 3 months post op. I'm not doing any exercise routine at all either. I had my surgery on September 19th so I'm almost 5 months post op now, but I don't know when I should start increasing my calories and what would be a good range. I know it'd probably better to not worry too much about the calories and just focus on getting enough Protein but I feel like I need to set a daily number to help keep me in check day to day. Thanks!

At 4 months post-op, I am eating around 1000 calories per day. But I am a 41yo, 6 foot tall man who currently weighs 230 pounds, so my needs would be different than, for example, a 55yo, 5 foot tall woman.

It really is variable depending on the person. I would get your team's input and then make a plan from there. I know that I have worked hard to consistently get my calories UP over the past 3 months. And it has helped my weight loss.

I am 5'4" and at five months out from surgery I weighed around 165 or 170. I was eating 600-800 calories then. I was walking, doing zumba, and body pump then. Around 8 or 9 months I started eating 800 to 1000 a day. A year out I was eating 800 to 1200.

Now, I am almost 2 years out. My base metabolic rate is 1350 calories. (I had a test done). I typically consume 1400 to 1600 calories a day. Some days more, some days less. I run 4 to 5 days a week, do weight training 2 hours a week, zumba for 1 hour a week, and yoga for 1 hour a week. My weight fluctuates between 116 and 119 depending on the time of the month. Due to my activity level I could consumer up to 2050 calories a day. My nutritionist suggests I only do that on heavy training or race days.

Just curious. What was your stats before surgery and how much have you lost? I am 5 months as well and my weight loss has stalled. I am at 51lbs down. I eat too much.

My highest weight ever was 310 pounds, I started my 3 week pre-op liquid diet at 285 pounds and day of surgery I was at 265 pounds. And today I am 215 pounds. So my weight loss strictly since surgery is the same as yours for 5 months out :)

I just increased my MFP settings to 1000 calories per day. Most days I exercise by doing a 3 mile run or a step or bodypump or yoga class. 800 calories was no longer cutting it for me. I'm 5 months post-op.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
