Which procedure to choose

Recommended Posts

I have just started my research into weight loss surgery after deciding to go for it. My first question on this forum is which surgery is the best between lap band or the gastric sleeve?

Think about it this way.

Lapband - do you have time to make all the fills needed, time incase slippages, blockages etc.

VGS - done in one.

It's down to choice, time available and insurance coverage or funding choices.

Very personal choice - I'm for VSG.

Gryffen,

I am leaning toward the sleeve procedure due to less complications and finding filling stations. I spoke with a Dr, who says he no longer performs the LP surgery. Maybe insurance purposes.

Good luck in your weight loss..

I had a friend that had the band. He LOVED ice cream...because he could eat it ALL day long! It would just slide right through! The band only stops you momentarily from eating like an asshole (I have a whole blog post about this). But your stomach is still there, growling and able to take in food whenever you please and on top of that, whatever you please.

Personally, I had the RNY and I couldn't be happier but there are draw backs to that. I having dumping, I have to take Vitamins for the rest of my life, and I had to change my eating habits completely.

I guess it just depends on what you want to deal with...

The band is a ticking time bomb. Concentrate on the sleeve and bypass.

SLEEVE 100%!!

I had the band in 2008. I had soooo many complications and so do many many other people. It has not been as successful as they hoped. My surgeon doesn't even put the band in anymore but they take out about 20 a year.

I suggest you DO NOT get the band.

The sleeve has been amazing for me. Even though I had some complications in the first 6 months (I am 8 months out now) I am so thankful for this surgery. It has saved my life!!

I wouldn't consider the band. Many patients have had long term complications, and a lot of surgeons will no longer perform this type of surgery anymore for that reason. Between those two options, I would choose the sleeve.

Wow. Suggestions are overwhelmingly one sided. Thank you all for steering me in the right direction. Now I will concentrate on where to have sleeve done. No Insurance so I have began another thread on having it done in Mexico. Any one know if charity care covers it in US?

I think if my doctor recommened me to do the lapband, i would run screaming at the top of my lungs the other way. In fact, when i went in to the office in Nov to discuss removing the darn thing (banded 2010), both told me right out that the majority of doctors are no longer not only not recommending it, they are no longer performing that procedure. I had my revision on 1/23 from the band to the sleeve. I say skip the band and opt for the sleeve if those are your choices. Best of luck.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
