Medications post surgery

Recommended Posts

I take cholesterol and blood pressure medication now, scheduled for surgery a week from today. I am curious to know how these meds are handled following surgery during the recovery weeks (liquids only and soft foods stages).

They are both large pills, so will I have to crush and put in the liquids (they both taste nasty, so hopefully not), or will I just hold off until I am at solids stage again?

This is definitely a question for your surgeon. I was on some supplements and medications prior to surgery. My surgeon told me when I had to go off of each pre-op and when I could re-start them post-op. You should go over all of this with your surgical team!

My surgeon said if there was a liquid form of my meds, (or a liquid equivalent), I should have my scripts re-written for that... if not, I could crush them.

Unfortunately for me, my medication has no liquid form or equivalent and because it is extended release, it also can't be crushed... so I have to cut it in half and do my best to swallow it with my sips of Water :-P

It hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be, but a couple times I did have half a pill get stuck in my throat because I just couldn't swallow enough Water to get it down all the way... had to cough it back up and re-take it.

I had to crush my meds for a week and then my surgeon said to start taking them normally at my 1 week follow up. I've had no issues.

I was taking small pills 1 day post op in the hospital, per my doctor. I had to find alternatives for bigger pills. Also, I already was taking liquid Vitamins, but I was told not to take them until after I had my one week follow up appointment with my surgeon.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
