Pre-op Diet & Gout

Recommended Posts

I had my first gout attack over 20 years ago and have mostly kept it under control by taking allopurinol daily. I can't remember the last time I had an attack. Well, I'm on day 3 of the Pre-op diet and I'm sitting here wide awake at 3am from a gout attack. Over the past 3 months, I've lost 40 lbs so I'm thinking all of this weight loss is what brought on the attack. I normally take a strong NSAID to help during attacks, but NSAIDS are going to become off limits in a few days and I don't think I can ever take them again. I'll need to walk as much possible once I have surgery, but that will not be an easy task if experiencing a gout attack.

Anyone else have to deal with gout during their pre-op and early post-op phase? Any advice?

I actually have had 2 attacks in my foot that I believe are gout, though it's pending diagnosis. In my research here on the forums it does seem like weightloss can trigger it, so it doesn't surprise me that you may be experiencing it due to that.

Definitely. Five months of gout following sleeve. Miracle cure. Two weeks of fruit and vegetables, no meat, take herbal supplements of celery, tart cherry, curamin, drink tart cherry juice, and use turmeric as a condiment. I was cured in the week. The gout medicine put me in the ER.

I second the tart cherry juice. That other stuff sounds good too!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
