Yes, I use straws daily, cleared by my Dr., and I've never found anything at Sonic I can have.

My Dr doesn't allow straws. I would check with your surgeon. Also, I can't have caffeine so even tea at Sonic, won't work for me. I had some Crystal Light the other day and I later learned had a little caffeine. The entire day I was uncomfortable and had more reflux than usual. Just not worth it to me.

My doctor said he doesn't care if I use a straw to just take it easy if I do. I used one once since surgery and it didn't bother me but it's not something I do often!

I have been using a straw with my morning Protein drink because I make it in my blender, and drink it on the way to work. The only cup I have that works well for this is one with a straw. I can say that I do notice a difference when drinking with a straw. I have to take it a lot slower than just drinking from a glass.

I'm 6 months out and still have issues with straws -- too much air in my tummy and makes me uncomfortable. I drink unsweetened iced tea everywhere or black coffee. I was out recently at a place where I couldn't get anything that was not carbonated so I nursed a Diet Coke for about 2 hours. Really didn't like it, either. Funny how our taste buds change.

My doc said no straws because it can put to much air in your stomach. As far as Sonic if it has any uncarbonated sugar free drinks I think they should be ok.

I am a former Lapband who was sleeved on 2-6. I never use straws. I don't drink sodas, I don't drink with meals.
Why?
Although I have been in the medical field for over 20 years, I am not a Bariatric Surgeon. My surgeon and his well-trained staff know how to navigate me through this to allow me to have a successful outcome. I am not going into this thinking that I know better/ differently than them. I am not usually that RARE person who is the exception to the rules. I have seen so many people disappointed with their results or surprised they are struggling because they all thought they knew better than their surgeon/support staff.
I am in NO WAY bashing anyone for their journey. I, personally am following my surgeon's plans to a "T".

With that being said we all want the best results possible. Surgeons are different. Some say straws are ok if you can tolerate some say differently. Not saying the some doctors are better than others, some have different opinions. I follow all of my MD's advice and he has straws are fine if you tolerate.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
