Armygalbonnie 643 Posted February 2, 2017 My Dr doesn't allow straws. I would check with your surgeon. Also, I can't have caffeine so even tea at Sonic, won't work for me. I had some Crystal Light the other day and I later learned had a little caffeine. The entire day I was uncomfortable and had more reflux than usual. Just not worth it to me. Sullie06 1,013 Posted February 2, 2017 My doctor said he doesn't care if I use a straw to just take it easy if I do. I used one once since surgery and it didn't bother me but it's not something I do often!
FindingCarrie 244 Posted February 2, 2017 I have been using a straw with my morning Protein drink because I make it in my blender, and drink it on the way to work. The only cup I have that works well for this is one with a straw. I can say that I do notice a difference when drinking with a straw. I have to take it a lot slower than just drinking from a glass. Maggie22 12 Posted February 2, 2017 I wouldnt make a habit of it because it causes excess air in your stomach.
Diana_in_Philly 1,426 Posted February 2, 2017 I'm 6 months out and still have issues with straws -- too much air in my tummy and makes me uncomfortable. I drink unsweetened iced tea everywhere or black coffee. I was out recently at a place where I couldn't get anything that was not carbonated so I nursed a Diet Coke for about 2 hours. Really didn't like it, either. Funny how our taste buds change.
Sleeveforme2017 144 Posted February 11, 2017 My md said we could use straws unless we started having a problem. Iv been using them. I'm 2 wks post op no problem. Belladonnis 32 Posted February 11, 2017 My doc said no straws because it can put to much air in your stomach. As far as Sonic if it has any uncarbonated sugar free drinks I think they should be ok.Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App 1 crazywomanincage reacted to this
regnamie 6 Posted February 12, 2017 I was told using straws can cause the stomach to stretch. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App 1 crazywomanincage reacted to this
TheBomb64 39 Posted February 12, 2017 Using straws means your taking in a lot of air with your fluids Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App 1 crazywomanincage reacted to this
tinawithasleeve 3 Posted February 12, 2017 I am a former Lapband who was sleeved on 2-6. I never use straws. I don't drink sodas, I don't drink with meals. Why? Although I have been in the medical field for over 20 years, I am not a Bariatric Surgeon. My surgeon and his well-trained staff know how to navigate me through this to allow me to have a successful outcome. I am not going into this thinking that I know better/ differently than them. I am not usually that RARE person who is the exception to the rules. I have seen so many people disappointed with their results or surprised they are struggling because they all thought they knew better than their surgeon/support staff. I am in NO WAY bashing anyone for their journey. I, personally am following my surgeon's plans to a "T".

Some say straws are ok if you can tolerate some say differently. Not saying the some doctors are better than others, some have different opinions. I follow all of my MD's advice and he has straws are fine if you tolerate.
