Reactive Hypoglycemia After RNY

Recommended Posts

I usually only eat fruit along with cottage cheese or Greek yogurt, never by itself or I add fruit to a vanilla Protein smoothie. I also like to sprinkle some nuts on my Greek yogurt & my fruit for extra Protein. So no it's not good to eat fruit alone without protein but fruit eaten with protein is more satisfying. When I eat oatmeal I can't eat over a 1/2 cup of it which is a regular size serving anyhow. I know in the old days I used to eat at least 2 servings or more serving sizes like I did everything else when I over ate. Lol What helps to tolerate it even though it's a healthy carbs is add nuts to it like pecans or walnuts. If it's instant oats don't use Water to cook it in but some kind of milk & after cooked add the nuts & even a 1/2 sliced banana or fresh blueberries or strawberries. Or after the oatmeal's cooked to make it taste like a no bake cookie, I stir in a little mire milk to cool it some, then add a scoop of chocolate Protein powder, some peanut powder (9g. Protein & less fat than peanut butter) & chopped nuts of some kind. Yum!

If I'm craving a fresh apple I'll slice it up & put it on a plate with a tablespoon real Peanut Butter & dip it in it. Again that's Protein with your fruit. I also like a diced up fresh apple cooked along with my steel cut oats. Then I add nutmeg & cinnamon to it, some kind of sf sweetener to taste & add either nuts or seeds.

I love Peanut Butter on an apple.....or banana. Sometimes I'll have a few almonds with fruit.....which works out well with blood sugar.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
