Need advice on getting started

Recommended Posts

I've been stuck at about 40BMI and seriously considering sleeve, including getting a consult from a local recommended surgeon, but my prior insurance plan excluded WLS. Switched insurance, but meanwhile suddenly have time to do it. So - I'm wondering what makes more sense - get qualified and approved (I guess 6 months to a year, but have no clue and have not checked) or Medical Tourism (Mexico, perhaps) on my own dime.

I would do the Mexico (at a hospital, with board certified...) if I was confident about things like - what if there are post-surgical issues? Has anyone dealt with that issue? What is your advice here? Any experience with issues down the road? Insurance issues?

It is really a personal decision. The process takes a few months, usually with monthly check ins to a nutritionist, psych, doc and possibly fitness coach. The process gives you plenty of time to evaluate for yourself if this is the right decision or not.

The medical center I am going through also required classes and provided a monthly support group both pre and post surgery.

Take your time and get as much information as you can, that should help you determine what is best.

Good luck on your journey!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
