Not me but: It's rare, it's deadly, it's excruciating.

Line up 200 patients, and

1 will get the leak.

2 will have blood clots.

6 will get an infection.

50/50 chance that 1 will die.

96 (!) will get worse heartburn.

Statistics off the top of my head... #s could be a bit off...

But, the point is that there are risks, but they aren't overwhelming.

Before my surgery my surgeon has his patients sign a paper with all complications that can happen. He pointed out how there are over 90 things that can happen, but very small chances with them including leaks. I guess for me it just came down to if I wanted to be obese for the rest of my short life or get surgery and have that opportunity to live life longer. You just have to figure out if your fears are greater than reality or if you can get over those fears for a chance at a healthy life.

Ask your surgeon what his/her rate of leaks is and what their approach is to reduce the risk.

It is not that common, but yes it does happen and is one of the most serious possible risks that can happen with this surgery. You'll know something is wrong if it happens.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
