Sharon Vance 5 Posted February 1, 2017 I have my evaluation on Friday 2/3/17 at 11am! Can anyone tell me what kind of questions I can expect? I do suffer from depression and I am on meds. I function in life just fine. I usually have a good cry and I'm good. Guess I'm worried they will tell me I'm not mentally fit for surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Don't worry. Im bipolar and have ocd, I had no problems. Im sure the drs understand that we all can be depressed because of our weight, pain from being overweight , etc. Im sure they know most people overweight have these problems and it shouldn't stop him from approving the surgery. I have one evaluation left...my dr requires 2. Hang in there and be positive Sent from my LGL62VL using the BariatricPal App
gryffen 176 Posted February 1, 2017 I had my psych evaluation just over a month ago and the forms I filled out AFTER the chat was very similar to what's been posted. Our evaluation lasted 90 minutes, it's an in depth chat about food, trigger points in life which may cause issues in future, what support is available and what could damage that support I won't lie, they are looking for weaknesses and being honest is the first thing they will tell you to be as if they know your not being then it's a MAJOR red flag. They are there to support you, offer guidance and techniques to help support yourself but in our managment service you aren't progressed to surgical classes or surgeons until they are 100% satisfied. I can only speak on my experience, Glasgow is incredibly difficult to access WLS via NHS and I truly believe USA need to tighten up it's legislation to access the surgery - that's coming from watching family go into far too easy and failing. Be honest it's the best policy. Fridge Pickers Wear Bigger Knickers ????

Salee 24 Posted February 1, 2017 They asked me whether I thought people stared at me, were making fun of me & if I thought if they were whispering about me. Consider b4u answer BC if u say yes they'll think u mean all the time not just once in awhile. Sent from my VK700 using the BariatricPal App
Poku 14 Posted February 1, 2017 This is such a helpful thread!! I have anxiety and have been stressing about this since I decided I wanted WLS. Don't think I have unrealistic expectations or goals. I have struggled with depression/self harm but have been much better for years. Can being a stress eater disqualify you? Because that's me. It's often how I cope with my anxiety now that I don't smoke, but I am sure I can find a different outlet. Exercise helps but my back is so bad, it's hard to do much. ShondaDaDiva 15 Posted February 1, 2017 When I had mine she mainly asked about my support system, my relationships, traumatic events, how i cope with stress. I also did a questionaire. I watched video and answered questions Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App
Armygalbonnie 643 Posted February 1, 2017 Mine asked if I used food as a coping strategy and what would I use instead once I had surgery. Also, she discussed addiction and transfer of addiction after surgery. I had done this in the past. I'm a food addict but then I transferred my addiction to exercise. When I got hurt and couldn't exercise like I was, I went back to food. She had me think of our activities that I could do, instead of dumping all my eggs in one basket. She wanted to make sure I had realistic expectations with surgery, knowing it's a tool and not a cure all.
evy17 24 Posted February 1, 2017 Thanks everyone! I think I'm so worried because I just went through a break up and I'm completely devastated. I cry a lot. Funny thing is I haven't turned to food. Some days I can barely swallow it. I'm doing this for me and only me. She didn't want to me have WLS at all. I guess you can say I have daddy issues too.....that is what has gotten me worried. I know I'm completely sane most of the tIme. Suicide has crossed my mind a million times lately but I do know that isn't the answer. I have the means to do it and yet here I am still breathing. I have too much to live for & I need to be healthy for it. I am ready to make this change. I'm a strong person. Being strong is all I know. I was told this surgery isn't a miracle cure. I know it's not but in my mind I intend to treat it as if it's a miracle cure. My desire to lose weight and to be able to do things I can't currently do out weigh everything else in my life. Thanks everyone for the advice and your stories. I greatly appreciate all the advice. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

WillWorkForShoes 19 Posted February 3, 2017 I don't think there's any way to tell you exactly what kind of questions they will ask because it's different for everyone. In general, they're looking to clear up the following: 1) Do you have realistic expectations for surgery and the amount of work that will be required on your part both pre/post op. 2) Are you truly ready to make healthy changes in your life and have you addressed the things that may have held you back before? 3) What kind of support systems do you have in place in your life? My evaluation was just a relaxed conversation with the psychologist, followed by an online test that I took afterwards. In hindsight, it wasn't scary at all and I worried (excessively!) for nothing. Hope this helps and good luck on your journey Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App This is exactly what they assessed for in mine, with the addition of wanting to see if I had any prior eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.
