Will eating ever feel close to normal again?

Recommended Posts

This may be premature of me to ask, as I am only 42 days post op sleeve. 40 pounds down, yay!

I am on soft food now, only able to take a few bites, and then I feel miserable. Not miserable because I really want more, but miserable because I'm uncomfortable.

It doesn't feel like a "naturally" full feeling at all, but more like discomfort deep in my esophagus, which automatically causes me to stop eating. My question is, will that change and will I eventually feel stomach full again or will it remain a discomfort or pressure sort of sensation in my deep in my esophagus for lack of a better description?

I worry about going out to dinner with others, it saddens me a little that I may never enjoy going out for a meal with my husband, because two minutes into a meal, I am so distracted by this miserable sensation. Feeling a little sad. Thoughts...?

Very good question. I'm not much farther along than you are. I can relate.

I am 1 year post op and it does get normal --or as normal as eating about 8oz of food and making sure it's lean protein/low carb can be. I go out to eat all the time with my husband, co-workers, friends etc. I switched jobs about 8 or 9 months post op, so most of my new coworkers have no idea I had surgery. They just see me as someone who eats clean and eats small portions. I say that to say, my eating habits seem perfectly normal to them. I think it became habit and normal to me around the 5 or 6 month mark---where I got to the place of knowing my body and knowing how many bites would be 1 bite too many before I took it. And knowing what foods agreed with my sleeve and what foods make me uncomfortable. Have faith, our new way of eating soon becomes our new normal!

Thank you, thank you!! I was feeling a little down. I wonder if others go through this at this point in the journey. I guess, I'm also a little nervous as I have dinner plans next weekend with some couples and am nervous about it. No one at the dinner knows. I have shared with some people, but not all.

Thank you for the reassuring reply, you did make me feel better!

I actually had to learn what full felt like because I always ate until stuffed. It was weird to realize full shouldn't feel uncomfortable. I measured everything for the first 6 months ( I still measure most of the time now) just teaching myself what a true portion size is. In the beginning, I struggled with eating one bite too many when out and I had to eyeball. Now I've gotten pretty good at it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
