I am in the process of getting VSG and have not told anyone in my family. I do not want to tell them because they can be very judgmental. I want to do this surgery without letting my family know about this because I know for a fact that they will try to talk me out of it and my mind is 100% set on having this surgery done. Is there anyone who can relate to this? If so, how did you deal with it and what was the outcome? Thanks!

Well, you know your family better than anyone, so the decision to tell them is up to you. It's nice to tell someone though..

I can! My husband knows & a few friends, that's it. I don't want to deal with the judgment either!!! I've always been the only overweight one & the recipient of their unneeded pity. Ridiculous since I've never let my weight stop me from living my life the best I can! I just can't wait to see their faces as the pounds melt off. They are so quick to point out my flaw, it's gonna be interesting when they don't have that anymore.

I told only 2 friends and the reason I told them is because they had the surgery as well. I wish I can tell my family because I want their support but unfortunately that won't happen!

Don't tell them. I didn't tell my dad or a couple of close friends because they are all judgemental. I changed my eating habits 2 months before surgery so they saw me change my eating habits prior to surgery. I will never tell them.

My mother particularly is very judgmental but she's so anti-fat that she was on board with me getting it done and VERY supportive. HOWEVER - now every single conversation starts with "how are you doing on your diet? Are you eating everything you're not supposed to be eating". So much for supportive, right? #annoyed

That's exactly what I'm afraid of. If I put my foot down and let my family know that I'm sticking to it, they would have no choice but to be supportive. However, I know they would definitely monitor my eating and make sarcastic remarks whenever I want to treat myself. Oh and God forbid I experience weight gain....I would never hear the end of it!

I thought my family would try to talk me out of it but surprisingly they are bring very supportive.. Now I don't care who knows.. there is still a few people who give me crap about it but it doesn't bother me.. I know what I want and no one is going to make me feel like crap because of it. Good luck!!

I didn't tell anyone either until I was absolutely necessary. I had one doctors visit where I had to bring someone with me. By the time I told everyone a week before surgery, it was too late and I let them know in my opening statement that they can't talk me out, of it I've already made my decision my surgery is already scheduled I'm just letting you know so that you'll know where I am. Follow your gut, pray and talk to your doctors a lot. Get advice from people who are on here who have been through it

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
