Barium Swallow After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm just wondering how many of your surgeons required a barium swallow after their surgery? If you had one, was it horrible? I can't imagine that it would be easy to keep that down after not eating or drinking for almost 24 hours!

I had one. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't my favorite thing either. It wasn't as bad as a normal barium swallow. It was in real time and it was a very small amount. It was also the gateway to other liquids. It was so not a big deal.

My surgeon does a leak test during surgery. Maybe you will be lucky and not need the test after surgery.

It was no big deal. I watched it go from my stomach into my small intestines and go pretty far pretty fast. It made it easier for me to feel better about drinking Water constantly. I saw how fast it went down and know that my empty stomach can't actually "fill up" with Water. It did taste terrible!

I did mine about 24 hours post op... 2 medium sized swallows of this crap that tasted like baby Shampoo (not barium... this was a liquid the color of ginger ale but with no bubbles) and one swallow of Water and the test was done in less than 15 minutes.

I had it. And it was horrible for me. The tech said I needed to drink the 4oz of liquid pretty quick but after just having surgery and only drinking 1/2 oz at a time, it hurt.

It WAS baby shampoo! I was trying to figure out how to describe the taste! Perfect!

I had one! It wasn't great as that was the first Fluid I had post op but it stayed down no problem. The hardest part for me was getting on the XRay table and moving around like they wanted less than 24 hours after surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
