wade5901 23 Posted January 30, 2017 Hello everyone I am new to this page I am 5 months in to my insurance approval process, and I just met with my surgeon here in Birmingham Alabama. Before i met with him i was looking at the Gastric bypass mainly for the reasons of negative reinforcement from dumping. Once i met with him he recommended the sleeve. I know in the end its up to me iI have done a ton of research lately and the sleeve and bypass seem to have the same weight loss percentage just a different amount of time. I also worry about weight gain after the fact i know it can happen with both. My Surgeon told me that a lot of the reason he recommends the sleeve is because of my job which is 75 to 80 percent of the time behind a desk. but the other i might be doing a lot of heavy lifting and walking with heavy loads. I am 6'3 420 currently and not sure which way to go I would love as much advice as i can get I am also putting this on the Gastric Sleeve board as i am confused as ever. James Marusek 5,244 Posted January 30, 2017 I had RNY gastric bypass surgery because I had severe acid reflux (Gerd). The sleeve will only make this condition worse. I am 3 1/2 years post op RNY at this point. I am 68 years old. The last couple years I moved 100,000 pounds of gravel by hand along with around 60,000 pounds of concrete blocks each year in one of my building projects around my home. So I do not think lifting heavy loads and walking with heavy loads should be much of an issue after RNY or sleeve surgery. You should be in much better shape after you heal from the surgery than what you are now.
Airstream88 361 Posted January 30, 2017 My surgeon recommended RNY (Bypass) because he felt I would lose more weight than with the sleeve. I'm not sure why the Sleeve would be better for someone that sits at a desk.
savyourdvine1 110 Posted January 30, 2017 I had a severe case of gerd, that went away after my gastric sleeve. My main reason for getting it. Now I'm free of meds that was working against my kidney. Soooo grateful Sent from my SM-J700P using the BariatricPal App
