Hi y'all! New here, and really hoping to meet some friends to help put my mind at ease! I have a couple questions if anyone would be able to help me!

1) My insurance requires 6 months of supervised diet, in the form of proof in the last 2 years you have tried 6x in different calendar months to lose weight. They also ask for a psych eval. I have all that done and done! I am going tomorrow to get blood work done, that my PCP suggested.

My real question is, how soon should I think about surgery if I already have what I need from insurance? My first consultation with my surgeon is 2/01.

I'm still in the 6 month supervised weight loss phase with my PCP. I just wanted to say welcome.

So your first appointment is in February, it could be expected in July. But it can take 3 weeks + to hear back from insurance (unless you're like me and continue bugging them)

However, my insurance required 6 months as well. I started in April or last year (the 8th to be exact) and just got approved 2 weeks ago with a surgery date of March 1st, so that's almost a full year.

Some have it right on the money, others have delayed times like myself. Make sure you have every possible appointment you may need within these 6 months so that things can be squared away.

Welcome! It all really depends on your surgeon's office and their scheduling. Insurance may take a few weeks for an approval and then they will schedule you. I started visit 1 in March last year and was sleeved end of September. Every insurance and office is different. Good luck!!

Many insurance companies require a medically supervised weight loss program that includes diet and exercise. The operative words here are medically supervised. I went through the program. I kept a food and exercise journal. I attended bariatric surgery support group meetings. After I completed the program, I took a couple months to get through the rest of the requirements including almost a day of classes, almost a day of pre-op testing, a second round of pre-op testing with specialist in their respective field for problem areas, and also there was the delay waiting for the insurance company to approve me.

Thanks for all the feedback! My insurance requirements have already been met! 6 month papers filled out and my psych evaluation was all they needed. I'm just worried the surgeon is going to be a slow process. Did anyone have everything done for the insurance when going?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
