Post-Op Activities Question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am pre-op still working on requirments before a surgery date can be set.

My question is, barring any complications, how long post-op before you can do something like visit an amusement park (no wild rides)? Hubby wants to plan a Disneyland trip, so we'll do Space Mountain and Matterhorn, but that is about as wild as it gets.

Is 6 or 8 weeks enough?

Thanks Everyone!

Denise :)

6 weeks should be fine I would think, but run it by your surgeon.

I took my kids to the county fair last month and most the rides I USED to LOVE really bothered me. It's like the G-force against my band/port really bothered my insides. Not PAIN per-say, just very uncomfortable, thus making the ride unenjoyable.

I sure hope it passes, cuz we're going to Disney in March!

For me it was 5 weeks before I re-joined my sand volleyball league and 3 weeks for bowling. Everyone heals differently but I would imagine that 6 to 8 weeks would be plenty!

Hi Everyone, Thank you for the responses. I will, of course, ask my surgeon. Just looking for a few personal experiences.

I appreciate it!!

I had my surgery on 8/27 and we're going to Disney on 10/21 - my doctor said that was fine.

Have fun!!

I'm so excited and ready for a VACATION! (it's also been a great motivation to try and lose as much weight as I can before the trip)

I am a baseball umpire and my doctor told me I could not work behind the plate for a month. I'm thinking if I had to, I could probably get through a game today though.

Thanks brandda and candle!

Candle: enjoy your trip and vacation! I am going on a cruise in 2 weeks. Have been told I cannot gain weight before surgery...and I go on a cruise...how silly am I?

I scheduled an appt with the nutritionist a week after, hopefully that will keep me sane on the trip.

Denise

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
