I am just not having them! ????

I'm a month and a half out of surgery and I've probably had a handful of small bowel movements. I know im so backed up. Ugh anyone else going through this? I'm taking stool softeners and milk of magnesia. Any more suggestions??

Sorry I know this is TMI.

I know exactly how you feel. I am lucky if I go once a week, and I had to resort to an enema for that. I take a stool softener every day, but that just isn't enough for me. My doctor recommended Miralax, but that doesn't work for me either. I found something called ClearLax. It is just like Miralax in that its clear and unflavored, and you can add it to your drink..and its cheaper. I found it on Amazon. It took about three days to work, but after that, I have been "moving" every day for 3 days in a row. Its been the only thing that has worked for me, other than an enema...and I don't want to do that unless I just have to. :-( It says not to take it for more than 7 days, so I figure I will probably take it for about 4 days out of the week, and then take a 3 day break.

What helped me was finding foods or drinks that I could have as part of my diet, but that 'cleaned me out'. For me, that was a cup of coffee with some skim milk (or black). Asparagus did the trick too once I was able to have that at 6-8 weeks. A small square of organic dark chocolate (76% cocao or above) also worked. I don't like dark chocolate, so that was terrible for me and thankfully only needed once or twice for aid. If you get the right kid it's low in sugar, carbs, fat, and can help. But yeah, try things like that. Good ole prune juice might help too.

Thank you. Did you go to the hospital for the enema or was it over the counter?

I had to use an over the counter enema after a few week out. I was in so much pain, but it was such a relief after using.

I just bought them over the counter. They work but I hate to resort to that.

I wasn't allowed to have juice and Miralax did not work for me either but Ducolax was a life saver. Make sure you are hitting your Water goals of at least 64 oz/day. Just know that we are eating so little early on that not going everyday may be your new normal.

TMI warning- I'm 4 years out and I still do not BM everyday. I only consider myself "backed up" if I don't go for more than 72 hours. Pre-op I went daily.

I'm 6 weeks po. I go about once every 4-5 days. It's a normal movement, not hard. I don't know what's going on. Hopefully I will become more regular soon.

Smooth Moves, Miralax, Colace and my prescription for Linzess and still no relief. I go every 2 weeks... I'm fed up.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
