How much did you lose the first week?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, it's day5 for me of my VSG surgery. I wanted to get everyone's take on how much weight you all lost in the first week. My highest weight was 281lbs and my day of surgery weight was 260lbs. I've been sticking to my liquid diet and have reached my Protein and Water goals each day but this morning when I stepped on the scale I was 258lbs. I thought I would have lost more than that since I'm only eating 200-400 calories a day. What was all of your experiences with the first week of weight loss?

You just had major surgery. You were pumped full of gas and IV fluids. Your body is reeling. Give it a second to sort itself out.

I know and I get it, I just keep seeing all these women losing 10, 13, 14lbs the first week, I'm just curious about other people's experiences.

PS: I lost 7 pounds my first week, but only 0.4 pounds my second week, for a total of 7.4 pounds my first two weeks. Guess what. I still got to goal!

The rate of loss is so truly irrelevant. This isn't a race. You have your sleeve for the rest of your life. In the grand scheme of things, if it takes you a month or two or six longer than someone else to reach goal, does it matter? The weight loss is only a tiny fraction of this journey. You will only spend a year or two losing weight. You will spend the whole rest of your life in maintenance after that.

I lost 13 lbs the first week then went on a 2 week stall with absolutely no loss. I tried to focus on healing and not loss for the first week. I am 1 month out and 23 lbs down. I started walking and exercising as early as I felt good.

I would stay off of the scale for the first month. Your body is healing and making the adjustments it has to make to set you up to lose weight if you make the right decisions.

And please don't compare yourself to others. It really is an apples-to-oranges situation and you'll drive yourself crazy.

Good luck!

I totally agree with this. The scale measures everything, not just fat. Your body is making adjustments, you are rebalancing your Fluid retention after the 2 week pre-op, and everything is inflamed. I lost a lot in the 2 week pre-op and then nothing in the 2 weeks after surgery. By the 3rd or 4th week, weight loss became more steady.

You are losing fat, even if the scale says otherwise. :)

I'm so glad somebody asked lol! And I'm glad people are honest and saying stay off the scale! I was sleeved 1/11/17 and I've lost 11 pounds so far. I feel a little discourages as I thought I'd lose more. And unfortuantely since I been home from the hospital I've been weighing myself everyday  But I do need to give the scale a rest! I can't wait until my doc said it's okay to exercise...maybe the pounds will start to drop then!

I was sleeved 1/19/17 weighted 282 and today I'm at 275. I think I'll stay off the scale for the first month because I don't want to become obsessed with numbers. As long as I feel good and start looking better.

I lost huge amounts of Water weight after surgery, but it almost doesn't matter. Unless I change my life, it all comes back sooner or later. This is the second surgery I have gone through, so I know first hand that surgery doesn't cure your brain, only you can.

Respect the process, and it will all come off. But equal to it coming off, is keeping it off through lifestyle changes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
