Pre-op weight issues....DAH!

Recommended Posts

My insurance requires me to put in 6 months weight management prior to surgary. The problem is that I am having trouble taking off weight like the dietician wants me too. I am walking alot and I have started Yoga but the food is still the issue. Now the dietician wants me to see the Shrink so we can discuss my "issues". Last month she, the dietician, made me cry. She keeps asking me what I am getting from overeating that makes me continue the habit. I told her that this is a question I have asked myself millions of times and that I would not be in this condition if I knew the answer to this. Now, I am worried that my "Issue" may keep me from surgery.

What do you all think? I know that I am not the only one with this "Issue"

Bugalu-I know exactly what you are going through and how you are feeling. I have been in therapy for a year and a half with a counselor who specializes in eating disorders and still haven't figured out what my "issue" is. I mean, yeah, there are a lot of issues in my life and we talk about them but that doesn't mean they are resolved....not by a long shot. She has helped me a lot, don't get me wrong but I still eat for whatever reason. When she asks you what you are getting from overeating that makes you continue the habit, I don't think she is trying to be mean. My counselor has asked me this in the past as well. And, same as you, I don't know.

If you can at all, I would try to see a counselor who specializes in eating disorders. This shows that you are willing to get to the root of your eating problem and gives you something to fall back on when you have your pre op psych eval. That way, you can tell them you have a counselor to help you deal with the emotional part of changing your eating habits. That's all they want.....not to stop you from having surgery but just to make sure you have the proper support for after.

If you just do a search for eating disorder counselors and then put your city and state after, you might be able to find someone. Or, if you want to tell me where you live, I would be happy to do a search on the web for you. I used this website to find mine but I don't know what state you live in.

Anyway, good luck and let me know if you have any more questions or just need to talk.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
