Anyone had thoughts of not doing surgery ?

Recommended Posts

I think more people have those thoughts than don't!

But the thing is, the main point of the surgery isn't really losing weight. As someone who has lost 60+ pounds on 3 different occasions and 10 pounds countless times, I can tell you there are plenty of less drastic ways to lose weight.

The point of this surgery is maintaining weight loss. The chances of being able to do that without surgery are ridiculously low, but with surgery they are decent. The most recent and best study I saw for people with morbid obesity like myself showed that 1 in 677 can lose and maintain a healthy weight without surgery. My experience shows me I'm not that 1. Of course, YMMV...

I had these same questions go through my mind; However, I stopped and realized that even though I lost 27 lbs prior to surgery, there is no way I could have maintained that limited amount of food with a normal sized stomach. Even though I did great pre-op, I was very hungry. In time, my hunger would have won over. Like others have said, I have lost the same 50 lbs numerous times, but I haven't maintained the loss. My sleeve is a tool that I can now use to help me maintain what I lose.

This is exactly what I have found. A year ago I went gluten free. Didn't limit potion sizes, but lost 15lbs in 6 weeks. Had this gnawing hunger the entire time. Tried some bread, hunger went away... bam! Off the diet, gained back the 15, plus 15 more for good measure.

For me, weight LOSS surgery was really weight MAINTENANCE surgery. I have lost weight many many times in the past. But I always gained it back. The weight LOSS part is actually only a tiny fraction of your WLS journey. You will only be losing weight for a year or two. After that you will have to maintain for the entire rest of your life. WLS is a tool to help you do that.

PS: The weight lost in the pre-op diet is mostly Water weight. As your body is depleted of glycogen stores, the Water that was bonded to the glycogen is flushed from your system. But that is a finite amount of water. After that water is flushed out, burning actual fat is MUCH slower.

I felt the same way....except after 2 summers gone by and I still bouncertainty between the same 15lbs up or down I made the decision that I wanted results. I font care how hard, how life changing, how much pain... I want results!!! I saw the Dr on Jan 24 and I am going the insurance route and hoping for a date of august or Sept. All I see ahead is results and that is my focus.

I've lost over 100 pounds 3 times. Your odds of keeping the weight off doing it on your own are dismal. Losing weight is the easy part. Keeping it off is a whole different ballgame. WLS gives you a chance to do that.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
