Dr Matthew Weiner's Pound of Cure diet

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else followed this plan post op?

I found the book interesting and bought it after watching his videos on youtube.

I am 8 months post op and can eat again now but struggle with animal Protein. His plan is a vegetable based eating plan and he recommends this for his bariatric patients.

Just wondering if anyone has tried it out and how it worked out for them.

Thanks!

YES!! He is my Dr. he did my surgery. He has tons of successful patients with a pound of cure. I love that he stresses fruits, vegetables, nuts , seeds and Beans.

I think his YouTube videos should be mandatory for pre and post op.

He really stresses no processed food. He does allow animal Protein but says to eat a pound of vegetables a day.

He really is top notch in this field and is a great, caring Dr.

He listens, has great bedside manner and really teaches you about nutrition not just losing weight.

I had my sleeve done by Dr. Weiner's partner Dr. Scott Laker. He is also phenomenal! Dr. Weiner checked in on me the day after my surgery, and he was wonderful about answering all of my questions, and really taking a genuine interest in my situation, even though I wasn't his patient. He and Dr. Laker really work well together, and follow the same approach from a nutrition perspective. For anyone in Michigan looking to undergo WLS, I would highly recommend both Dr. Weiner and Dr. Laker. They, and their staff are really great about ensuring that you have all of the tools that you need to be successful.

I love Dr. Weiner! I binge-watched all of his videos on YouTube and knew this is what was right for me based on his videos. I really wish I could have had him as my doctor. I also bought his book but I haven't read it yet. I don't think I'll give up animal Protein post-op, unless I can't handle it, but I really think his focus on vegetables is the right way to go.

He still encourages animal Protein, just less of a percentage than on most plans.

The book is fantastic!

I bought his book recommended by another bp user. I've read the first two chapters and it really confirmed to me this is the way I want to go post op (trying to do it pre op too). I'll still have some lean chicken and shrimp on occasion, but I do love the idea of a pound of veggies a day. Great way to heal the body naturally.

You've got to watch Forks over Knives on Netflix if you haven't already. All the science behind a mostly plant based diet is just awesome.

question for everyone following a pound of cure -- how much Protein do you get? i mentioned it to my dietian and she told me not to follow it b/c there wasn't enough protein. but I really want to follow it!

I found his book excellent. The only problem I had was that I am on a low FODMAP program so can't eat legumes and some vegetables. I must be getting enough protein as my six month post op checkup didn't indicate a protein issue and my hair is now growing back.

His pound of cure program is for everyone, not just bariatric patients.

Vegetarians who have bariatric surgery are able to get enough protein post op so I believe it can be done.

Saying that, if your program says no, then you should follow your plan.

You can also schedule a skype appointment with Dr Weiner to get his opinion.

Good Luck and God Bless

Of course she did. It's not the standard diet for bariatric patients and she probably doesn't know how many grams of Protein One is able to get following a mostly plant based diet because she never had a patient who asked about it and is therefore not familiar with it since it's definitely not part of her education.

bariatric patient = needs boat loads of lean animal protein

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
