Antidepressants in the first few days

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I take an antidepressant daily, a small tablet. It is not available in liquid form. Its a small (ish) dose and I don't mind missing it for one day but any longer and it has withdrawal effects etc. Has anyone else had something similar to deal with. I was wondering could it be crushed but still will I get it down on day 2? Day 1 my surgeon advised is no liquids at all. 18 days until surgery. Thanks

Hello,

I take bipolar meds, one of them is an antidepressant.

I asked my surgeon about my bipolar meds ahead of time. I was told that if the pills were too large to fit through a hole punch, that they would need to be broken in half or into even smaller pieces.

The only day I had to go without my meds was the first night in the hospital. The next day they sent me home, and I took my daytime and night time bipolar meds. The antidepressant wasn't too much bigger than the size of a hole punch, so I was able to break it in half and take the two halves with Water that night. Some of my other pills were quite a bit larger than that and I wound up breaking them into 3 or 4 small pieces. I just took each piece with a small sip of Water. It worked out fine. I did that for a few weeks until I could swallow my meds whole.

Good luck with your surgery!

i take a pill daily that if not taken makes me sick!!!!!!!!! the withdrawal effect is awful. i was allowed to crush my pill and take it so i never missed a dose. i will say i could only handle the crushed pills about a week; the taste is awful. i, then, started taking them whole and had no issue. they were not huge.

My doctor gave me the liquid form of my anti-depressant. Wasn't very nice taste so had to mix is with Crystal Light but got me through the first 6 weeks just fine.

One of my requirements for surgery was to have my meds reviewed by a pharmacist to see if anything larger than a children's Tylenol could be crushed or liquified. Maybe you could have the same done:)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
