Bandsters with small children come in!!

Recommended Posts

I am being banded 10/2 and I have a 15 month old DD. One of the things I am dreading is that I won't be able to carry her or pick her up for a couple of weeks. How long did it take before you were back to normal with your kiddos? And since I am right handed I always carry DD on my left hip. With the port on the left side will I still be able to carry her that way after I am healed up? Or will it always be uncomfortable and will I have to carry her on the other side? Not a huge deal I know but I've "practiced" carrying her on the right and it just doesn't feel right! LOL!

Thanks!

Hello!

I have three girls ages 20 months, 20 months and three and a half. I was banded in July and was able to get some help from my husband since he's a teacher...and my sister helped as well. The babies didn't understand not to hit my stomach, so I wasn't able to hold them for at least a week. After two weeks, I just picked them up. Actually, the surgeon said I could pick them up as soon as getting home, but that I wouldn't want to...he was right!

As for the port...I carry both babies all of the time...and i haven't had any issue with the port...

Best of luck!

Rainer

Hi, I am being banded tomorrow- 9/24/2007. I have an 18 month old. And yeah, I had thought of that too- if he's too heavy to be carried. Oh, well- they can sit on our lap! :clap2: (Yay for us!!)

Hi there-

I was banded a week tomorrow and I have a 22 month old that is very attached to mommy so even when daddy takes care of him he wants mommy. My parents kept him the first two days and than my husband and I both cared for him. It has been a little hard because he wants me to hold him but I just tell him mommy has a boo boo on her tummy and can't hold him and he is ok with that most of the time.

Good luck with your surgery!

My doctor also told me that I could pick up my 10 month old the day after surgery...it wouldn't mess anything up inside, but it would probably hurt. I was able to wait a few days thanks to family, but I picked my little guy up about 4 days after surgery, and was fine.

I was banded Aug 27th. At the time, my son was 10 months old. I thought I was going to have help, but my help flaked. I had surgery on Monday and back home Thursday. My son weighed 18 pounds at the time and I picked him up with no problems. Yeah, I was a little sore from surgery, and made sure I was really careful, but everything ended up OK.

Good Luck. And if you can find some help for the 1st week, take it.

Hi there, my youngest is 24months. The first few days, my husband did the lifting. If she wanted me, then I'd sit and let her climb up next to me. I kept telling her that mummy's tummy is sore and she was fascinated with the scars. Every 5 minutes she'd say "Mummy, I look at tummy?"

The hardest part I found was lifting her out of the cot. I put a kids table next to it so she could climb up so I wouldn't llift her as far. Also the baby seat in the car was difficult. After 3 weeks I am doing all as normal.

Good Luck!!

Nikki

I was banded 6 days ago and I have a 3 year old daughter. I told her that I would not be able to pick her up because my "tummy" is sick. She wanted to see my tummy, so I showed her the incisions. Now she is fascinated and asks me every morning if my tummy is feeling better. She asks to see my tummy everyday. Of course, there are times that I absolutely HAVE to pick her up to put her somewhere, but I try to squat instead of bend over. She is a daddy's girl and daddy loves it, but she has been great about not having me to do certain things that I usually do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
