Dizzy Spells When Standing

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. :)

I'm looking for advice/ideas on this issue and also wondering if anyone else has dealt with it after surgery.

I'm 10 weeks post-op. About a week and 1/2 ago, I started getting dizzy spells, usually upon standing. I could be sitting and stand up (slowly) or I could be lying down and then stand up when it happens. It has also happened a couple of times when I have already been standing up for awhile. Like earlier today, I was doing dishes in the kitchen and all of a sudden I got very dizzy and had to go sit down.

It happens everyday, at least a couple times a day, sometimes more.

I am currently getting about 900 calories a day. I eat 3 main meals, and add in a couple of Snacks at late morning and late afternoon. Keeping my carbs below 40 grams a day. I get in about 100 grams of Protein a day and I drink about 80 ounces of liquids a day.

I had an idea that this might have to do with blood pressure. I have never had high blood pressure. I believe the last time I saw my surgeon at 6 weeks post op, my blood pressure was 122/75.

Thank you in advance for any help on this.

This happens to me too and it comes and goes. I can go weeks and be fine and then over the New Year I had it happen for 3 days straight. I almost passed out! I have not checked with my doctor yet (which would be my suggestion to you) but I assume its because our blood pressure is too LOW not too high. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the caloric intake because on those days I was eating plenty of food (during the holidays) so keep me posted! :)

Interesting... yes, I guess it makes sense about the low blood pressure and that might just be it.

I was thinking if it goes on another week I will get into the doctor.

Thank you for your reply.

That's scary. Please get checked. I've never had an issue with blood pressure, but I haven't had the surgery yet either. I do have vertigo and it can happen just like you described too. Probably not related, but still the same stuff. Anyway, hope all will be well.

Dizzy spells can also be caused by not getting enough fluids. I had that problem for a while, but once I upped my Fluid intake, the dizziness went away.

Great thing to talk with the doctor about!

I've had a similar problem and my doctor told me to eat more salt. (My blood pressure was pretty low and have a history of low blood pressure.)

I've added a regular v8 which has a good amount of salt but also have salt packets in my purse. When I'm feeling low or woozy, I sit down, take out one and eat some salt. Usually I'm feeling much better in a few minutes. It is odd to do in the beginning though!

Good luck!

Oh my god I'm not a freak! Lol I was sleeved 12/19/16. I had this EVERY day and multiple times a day when I was on the liquid and puree food stage. I haven't had it in about a week. Nothing I did made it better besides trying not to get up and my doctor was okay with me not walking much because of it he told me to be cautious. Once I got into normal food like chicken and steak it got better also drinking tons more amounts of Water. I never tested my blood pressure during it but that could be it too

I am a month post op. Losing weight fast. Was 241 now 208. But I logged into this app because I was wondering the same thing? Sudden dizziness from standing up. Eating 70 to 80 grams Protein and 40ish carbs. About 800 cal. a day. Going to ask my doctor too. I also feel fatigue and winded quickly. I hope it's just our bodies adjusted. Will let you know what my doctor says. Thanks for posting.

I get fatigued and winded quickly too, don't know if it's related to the dizziness.

Thanks to everyone for the replies/help, I really appreciate it!

I agree that it sounds like low blood pressure, from dehydration, and/or electrolyte imbalance.

We are so used to everyone saying salt is the bad guy, it is easy to forget we need it! cheese has some, but many of the other recommended foods don't. Start salting meats, potatoes, eggs, etc. Regular V8 is a good idea if tummies can handle the tomatoes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
