What to bring to hospital?

Recommended Posts

I'm having surgery on Thursday and it just occurred to me that I need to bring a bag to the hospital. And I hate packing. It gives me insane anxiety.

When I had my daughter, six years ago, I packed totally wrong for the hospital. I was told to pack clothes that I wore when I was around 6 months pregnant. What a joke! I literally lost 9 pounds after giving birth, pretty much exactly enough to account for the weight of the baby plus the placenta. And my feet were so swollen when I got out that I had to wear a pair of slippers home because none of my shoes fit.

I remember some people on my mom board saying they put makeup in their hospital bags, but I honestly don't care what I look like when I'm recovering. In my pre-op class they said NOT to bring meds, that they would give us anything we take regularly, plus anything we need for any pain or discomfort.

When I gave birth they had me in hospital gowns the whole time. I only got dressed to go home. Is it the same way with bariatric surgery? If so, I really only need a baggy shirt, leggings, undergarments, socks and slippers, right? Deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, I guess. What else?

It really depends on how long you are staying in for but the things I took and used were:

Change of clothes for going home (baggy dress as I couldnt stand anything round my tummy)

Toiletries/hair brush

GasX strips

Lip balm (dont use Vasaline if you are on oxygen after the surgery!!)

Mobile and charger

Ipad/kindle and charger

Some magazines

3 nightdresses (I stayed in 5 nights)

For the drive home, my husband brought a pillow so I could put the seat belt round it.

My surgery was on Nov. 30, and I took a bunch of stuff and didn't end up needing any of it. If I had it to do over again, all I would take would be:

Clothes that are easy to put off and take on for the trip to and from the hospital. (Sweat pants and a t-shirt)

Toothbrush and toothpaste (some funky breath after the surgery)

Cell phone and charger.

I brought my ipad, books, magazines and all sorts of other stuff to kill time and ended up not even touching any of it. Even the cell phone I only used to make sure my ride was on it's way. Even deodorant ended up being useless as I only really needed it when I left the hospital, and I ended up taking a long shower when I got home anyway.

Hmm, I already bought the gas X strips, but was planning on leaving them here. Did they let you use them in the hospital?

My surgery is at 2:30 pm, so I was told I might have to stay 2 nights since not everyone is ready to go in the morning after an afternoon surgery, but I didn't know there were insurances that let you stay 5 nights!

I'm thinking I will keep it pretty simple. Obviously I need my phone and charger, but I agree that there should be no need for a bunch of stuff to keep myself occupied. I'm sure I'll sleep more than normal due to the pain meds.

I am in England and went private, I could have stayed up to 7 nights if I didn't have any issues but wanted to go home sooner.

Some nice thick slipper socks. Hospitals are cold so those would help with that and also prevent you from slipping when they have you walk. Those hospital socks suck. (imo) I also brought a robe and wore over my hospital gown when walking. Luckily the IV is long enough for your sleeves and won't cause issues (for me anyway).

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
