Does taking Biotin before surgery reduce hair loss?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am not having my surgery (sleeve) until June, but someone told me that I should start taking Biotin now to prevent hair loss. Does anyone know if it really will prevent/reduce Hair loss if I start taking it 4.5 months early?

I wouldnt say so. I used hair thickening Shampoo and conditioner and that worked a treat. Doesn't stop the Hair loss but at least I could make it look half decent.

Nothing will prevent hair loss but Biotin will help with new growth.

That is what my bariatric nurse says to do and keep taking it after surgery too!

My hair stylist explained that the hair that is in the resting state at the time of surgery sheds around 3-4 months post op. Once it's out new hair grows. Not everyone has Hair loss (or admits it) but she, my nut, and surgeon all told me it isn't preventable. My stylist estimates I lost 10-15% of my hair.

I started taking it 3-4 months preoperatively and am still taking it 4 months postoperatively. IDK if it's fake science that it works or doesn't work, but figured one mega bottle from BJs was a small price to pay if it DID work, so have been taking it now seven months.

I can only speak for myself, but I have very nice, thick hair, and am at the point most people experience Hair loss from the trauma of surgery and weight loss, and I feel my hair is just as good as before surgery, if not better. My hairdresser just commented on how healthy and shiny it is Friday, and she doesn't know I had surgery. I just asked if there was breakage/thinning or any issues she saw.

So, FWIW, what's a $15 bottle of Biotin if it helped me? I pissed that money away on nonsense in the past, so if it helps; great. If not, no big deal. It's just one more Vitamin I add to my daily regimen, hardly a hard thing to implement.

From what I understand Biotin doesn't prevent Hair loss or make your hair grow faster, but it does allow for new hair to come in healthier. So likely you'll still have hair loss but if you're on biotin it will come back healthy and pretty.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
