6 days post op - need protein - help/advice please

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm 6 days post surgery and I'm currently on a diet of soft scrambled eggs, weetabix (fibre rich Breakfast cereal...not sure if you have in US), Soups & Meal Replacement shakes.

I am generally quite satisfied with just about anything I try at the moment and find I am getting full up easy... so it's definably working lol

One of my main concerns is that apart from the shakes (which im not having everyday because they are so filling)

I'm not getting in enough Protein.

Could do with some advice on how to up my intake.

Thanks

Most of us get Protein in the early days post-op from our Protein Shakes. Depending on what kind you are drinking, you should be trying to get in 2-3 of those a day. Yes, they are filling. Everything is at that stage. VERY surprised you are on Weetabix so soon post-op, but every plan is different. If you are doing okay with the eggs, those are also a very good source of protein. Another is Greek yogurt if you are allowed that at this point.

Maybe add half cup of cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs, that's all I can think of now, maybe call the Dr.

Instead of making a Protein Shake, use Water and make a DRINK. nectar has really good flavors. I am 8 wks and I still can't handle shakes.

When making your Protein shakes, mix Fairlite milk in it because there is 13 grams of Protein in it. That's about 35 grams of protein in your morning Protein shake. Then have another shake in the afternoon, even made with Water, will get you close to your recommend 60 grams per day and that's not including what you are eating. I like the nectar brand too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
