Liquid diet.. cream soup?

Recommended Posts

If you are on Clear Liquids, you can only have broth, but if you are on full liquids, you should be able to have strained cream Soups. Might want to stay away from Tomato Soup this early, though. It's very acidic.

Why, during clear liquids and Protein shake stage, are Protein shakes allowed as they are not clear? Just wondering...

That wasn't really explained to me, though I didn't really have as clearly defined food stages. I was allowed to introduce specific new foods at specific days post-op. I had true "clear liquids" days 1-3. On day 4 I was allowed drinkable yogurt. Day 5 I was allowed to start Protein Shakes. Day 10 was when I was allowed other full liquids like strained cream Soups.< /p>

There is a reason it seems every Dr. has a different post-op protocol. Every one of them have made a "best guess" as to what the stomach can handle, and when.

For example:

If the surgeon starts with a 3 day, clear liquid recommendation, and finds patients have problems with milk on day 4, the surgeon may modify his protocol. Over time, the protocol gets refined based on experience.

So, the Surgeons find that Protein consumption must resume asap, so they try Protein shakes during the "clear liquid" stage, find they are tolerated, and voila! New protocol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
