Looking for alternatives to soda

Recommended Posts

I am 8 weeks post op vsg and am doing really well--however, my biggest and newest issue is that nothing I drink is satisfying--I'm doing my crystal light and regular Water and have been trying lots of other choices that are zero/low calories/sugar, etc, but nothing is like it used to be. I'm finding it strange that the taste change for me has been with my drinks! I wasn't an "addicted" diet coke person, but I did enjoy it at least once a day or every other day. Plus, I think one of my medications causes dry mouth and I found sparkling waters/soda cut right through it--sigh!

Any other ideas?

I love Ocean Spray diet cranberry. It's 10 calories a glass. I put half a glass and then fill it up with Water and ice. It's very refreshing. They have other flavours which I also drink.

That's probably the thing I miss the most : Diet Coke or fizzy Water like Perrier. 2 month out and still miss it. I squeeze a lemon into my Water makes it go down smoother . Try also infusing water with fresh mint, cucumbers or grapefruit slices. Hope this helps.

Before surgery, the only way I could drink a lot of Water is to use Crystal Light. Now that I am post-op, the only thing i want to drink is plain Water. It is so strange how the surgery changes your cravings and everything.

I am still mourning Diet Coke, and I imagine that I always will. While I predominantly drink Water, I also have Powerade Zero (fruit punch specifically) and iced tea from time to time.

@@Robin Weinrich I feel your pain. I am 1.5 years out and I still crave Dt. Coke...it was my most FAVORITE thing. I would probably give my left arm for a diet coke. You're right tho...surgery changes your taste buds and I haven't quite figured out why.

I only drink Water now...but at the beginning I tried everything under the sun... Do you like milk? I craved chocolate milk for a while but couldn't have it because of the sugar. I found that Fairlife milk is good and I mix half the chocolate and half white for a good mix.

What about the refreshers from starbucks? They are low in sugar...I drink Decaf green tea now and that actually curbs my "hunger"... I say it with quotes because i'm convinced its all in my head not my tummy.

crystal light... sugar free tea... sadly...nothing will replace the bubbles.

If crystal light isn't hitting the spot, try infusing fruit or herbs in your Water. In the summer time, I squeeze fresh lemon (if I'm out, I'll use lemon juice in the bottle) and sprinkle in a little Splenda! (Last summer, it was my fresh squeezed lemonade with a shot of American Honey whiskey...I guess this summer I'll hold the whiskey!!

I buy grape and lemon lime Proteinex from Bariatric Choice website. It is 18 gr of Protein in 2 tablespoons. I mix it with Water and sometimes add diet cran grape, cherry, or mango juice. No bubbles but I really like it and it adds the extra Protein that I need. I very rarely drink straight water anymore. It seems too thin or something.

I drink a lot of ice tea, various flavors. I like the Lipton diet peach when I want to grab a bottle of something or I grab a tropa-Roka diet Snapple. I used to do plain black ice tea and that doesn't seem to work for me right now, so I need a flavored tea or I can do green tea.

I definitely agree that it changes things!! I was just the opposite. I used to drink water all the time, but after surgery, water just made me so nauseated! My doctor said there is actually something called "water nausea." I am 5 months post-op, and I am just now able to drink plain water again. I have been drinking Crystal Light and other flavorings like crazy!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
