Yep. I had mine September 28 in Slidell, LA. I lost 99 pounds during my six-month insurance-required pre-op diet program, and I have lost an additional 62 since the surgery -- 161 pounds total!!

Where are you in your journey?

I have my 1st appt with the surgeon tmrw. I'm anxious to see what I will have to do in the next few months. I hope to have my surgery in June. I work in a public school so I will have about 8 weeks off to recuperate and get used to new way of eating and exercising before the next school year begins end of July.

Good luck tomorrow! The journey is very exciting and worth every sacrifice.

In my case, I met with the nurse practitioner and she went over the different types of surgeries and went over all of the requirements of my insurance. (They had gotten pre-clearance from the insurance up front.)

The also took the official starting weight, recorded all of my vitals, and ordered the first set of labs for a baseline.

It might have been about 20 minutes total. They have always been a quick-in-and-quick-out kind of place.

Good to know! Thanks! How much did your insurance pay? I am anxious to find that out. My dad said he would pay what insurance doesn't. He is really excited for me to get this surgery!

For my insurance (Blue Cross/Blue Shield Anthem), I just had to meet my out-of-pocket maximum ($2000). I had paid about $700 in co-pays, lab fees, and an abdominal ultrasound, so by the time my surgery came around, I had about $1300 left, so that's all I paid.

Everyone's insurance is different, though.

I have the same insurance. Did you have to buy to buy Bariatric products like shakes and Vitamins and stuff like that?

Nope. Since I lost so much weight during my six month program, I didn't have to do the traditional pre-op liquid diet. And I just buy my Vitamins at the drugstore. When I did shakes (I haven't had to drink them regularly since I was able to bring meat back into my diet), I just bought Premier Protein at Sam's Club and Isopure Zero-Carb Protein powder at GNC.

I think a lot of those bariatric products are unnecessary and overly expensive. I steer clear of them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
