Gaining weight pre op

Recommended Posts

Okay; so i had a baby 6.5 months ago, and i was breast feeding up until she was about 2 months which was when i started my 6 month program. I was weighed right before i stopped and mu initial weight was 256. But since i stopped breastfeeding all the fat calories that were going into my milk held on to my body and i gained 8 pounds in a month. I am on month 4 out of 6 and Since that i haven't gained anything, but im worried because i did gain that insurance may have a problem. I do think i will lose weight on the 2 week liquid diet before surgery and im sure i can lose that 8 maybe even more. But Did anyone else gain weight while pre op and still get approved with insurance?

It depends on what your insurance company and surgeon requires. My insurance company didn't require me to lose weight but my clinic did. I had to have some type of loss every single month for 6 months or else they won't even submit to insurance company. Most people do lose a lot on the liquid diet but usually that starts after you are already approved so that won't be taken into account.

My surgeon wouldn't even schedule surgery until I had lost 10% of my excess weight. It depends on your team, but you might not get to the pre-op diet without some work first.

My insurance or Surgeon didn't really stress weight loss during the 6 month time frame. A couple of months the scale showed a 1-3 lb increase, but as long as it wasn't more than that, they were okay. It can also be Water weight, so I don't see them being that strict unless it's written in docs from your insurance company

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
