United Health Care Insurance

Recommended Posts

I have United Health Care Insurance. I called them to make sure the Gastric Sleeve is in our policy and it is! Yea!!! My question is, does anyone have this insurance? Does anyone know if they require anything before surgery, like 6 months dieting...etc... My seminar is Feb 1st.

Thank you

I have UHC. The plan my employer has is very good but still requires a 6 month diet plan. My PCP just has me weigh in every month. As far as other requirements, I had blood work done, a psych evaluation. I had to have an EGD and a nutritional class as well. The center that I need to go to requires 3 "blocks". I'm currently completing block 2, so still more to come. If your employer has a benefits book, look over Bariatric Services. Everything will be noted there.

I have UHC. My doctor's office ran all the insurance paperwork for me. I was required 6 months nutritionist visits, EGD, psych evaluation, sleep apnea....and I think that's all. I started in April 2016, met with the surgeon 7/21/16....done with all my requirements 9/1/16...and I was approved 2 weeks later. Surgery 10/26/16. I had gastric bypass.

good luck...I paid $2500 out of pocket....just the hospital stay was 35k for two days!!! I would have never been able to do it without UHC

I have United Healthcare Choice and I still don't know all of the requirements of my plan even though I called the customer service number on the back of my insurance card. The reps that I spoke to didn't know what the requirements were beyond bmi numbers.

I am so glad that this forum exists so that I can at least learn what steps other people have taken and do the same. I have already done the online seminar so my next step is to speak with my PCP and hopefully get a medical clearance letter from her.

Since you are attending a seminar in person there might be someone there that you can ask about the specific requirements for your UHC plan. Good luck in finding all of the information that you need.

I have UHC they required a bmi of 40 and over or 39 and under with I believe two comorbidities, 5yr history of being obese, 6 month of weight loss effort (just weigh ins with my PCP) and a psych eval, and that I be enrolled in their bariatric program.

It really seems like everyone is different, I'd check in with your insurance.

Thank you for your help!

I hope my UHC doesn't require 6 months of dieting. I've dieted most of my life already.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
