Heat? Fat? Pain? Day 4-5 post op

Recommended Posts

Hi,

So, my RNY surgery was Monday and I finally got home yesterday! (I had severe post op nausea and dry heaves so they kept me until they were sure I could stay hydrated without an IV).

Right now, I am being told to focus on liquids above all else. Jello, G2, and popsicles (and water) are all fine. But when I try chicken broth I sometimes get pain on my left side. Sharp, weird pain. Could it be the heat? The fat? (I made and froze homemade chicken broth; I skimmed the fat but didn't manage to get it all)

I'll try Protein shakes soon too although the smell bugs me so far.

Just curious: was anyone else sensitive to temperature post op? The very good PA in the hospital did not seem surprised when I only wanted cold things

Yes - lots of us are sensitive to temperature. Usually it is to cold things. Is that the only time you have pain? and with the only thing? Sorry you went through that hospital drama, but glad they kept you on IV's while they sorted it out.

I know some people have gallstone issues triggered by fatty food but I think that usually comes after a significant amount of weight loss. Did they check for gallstones as part of your pre-op testing?

Interesting. I also get pain when bending (ah, the wonder of incisions!). The gas pain is overall declining. No previous galllstone issues (I know that can happen but also thought it happens later, after big weight loss-- I'm not weighing myself daily but nothing crazy is happening based on my clothes).

(I lay down and felt better-- it is possible I just need rest, for all of the internal and external muscles!)

I'm almost four weeks out and I still have pain at the large incision site. They cut through those muscles and had to stitch them up so you don't get a hernia. That has been the hardest part of my recovery.

I was told that the pain on the left if the bowel movement since that is the side where it takes place. have you had your first movement yet. I know i felt better after the first good movement.

I would call your doctor if you haven't had one in more than three days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
