So just made my Nut and Psych Eval but stressing more over the psych Eval more. Any tips on what I should expect ? What should I do to prepare myself? Or if I should be worrying so much? I just have battled with depression for many years but I'm in such a positive mindset now that I worry I may get denied and everything will be set back and all my dedication and high hopes will be gone. So I really just need good vibes and positive tips.thanks to all .

My pysch test wasn't that bad. Was only about 10 minutes of talking with him then the rest was a nearly half hour survey. And the survey is one of those that are clear cut on how to answer. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but I would say that it's better to be honest if you struggle with depression eating. I battled serious depression for years as a late teenager and through my early 20s. Going through counseling was the best thing that I did to put things to the past and look to a future without all the baggage. I was honest my with my pysch guy - told him of things that had happened but it was Water under the bridge. He was kind of taken aback that it didn't bother me and pretty much said I have my crap together...lol.

Maybe don't look at it as so much as matter of saying the right things to get approved for surgery as it is another step in doing the things to be successful. Isn't that uncommon for people to have struggled with depression at some point, but if you're in a better place then that's something to be proud of.

I agree. Be honest about your past and how you've learned to cope with your issues and I can't imagine them denying you. We all have issues with food that we deal with and will continue to deal with the rest of our lives but it's the willingness to accept that we have a problem that allows us to fix it. Good luck

They want to make sure you don't have an eating disorder, and you have a support system in place.

I'm on anti-depressants. The psych doctor made sure that medication wouldn't affect my surgery. I've see. A therapist in the past & my psych doctor just needed clearance from my therapist that I'm mentally prepared to have surgery. And everything turned out to be fine.

Height 5'0"

Weight for consultation: 216 lbs.

Pre-op Weight: Unknown until January 20th.

My profile picture is not me. It's my "FitSpiration" body.

Sleeved on 12/10/16. Dealing with severe depression for years and on Wellbutrin prior to surgery. My psych evaluation was very easy. 15 minute convo and leading questions about having a support network in place and managing your expectations. I stressed it to no end beforehand though, so I understand how you feel. It will go fine if you stay positive and even keeled. And the depression will improve dramatically within your first month after surgery if your experience is anything like mine. I stopped taking antidepressants, at least for now.

That said, I explored bariatric surgery once before in 2014 with another surgeon. And I got as far as the psych evaluation in that program and he wouldn't clear me. At the time I was at my lowest depression and actually thought about suicide often. For his evaluation I had to do a two page questionnaire on my mental state before we spoke. I was brutally honest on the forms and it got me into trouble during the interview. He refused to give me the clearance and I was so discouraged that I gave up on all of it for 2 years. I thought being honest with "my doctor" would be fine, but his primary interest was actually protecting the program and the surgeon more than doing what was best for my health. He rationalized it that my emotional state could be too dangerous and risky after surgery if I experienced additional depression due to lack of ability to eat. I argued that the surgery was the best option to improve the depression and that he had a duty as a doctor to see that. He refused. My primary doctor yelled at me for being too open and honest about the depression. So just be careful what you say. Stay positive all the way. That you are eager to have this tool to help you reach your goals.

Good luck!

Psych eval was no big deal. 15 minutes of talking and then took a long survey. Nothing to stress over.

Thank you so much and yes I'm on no antidepressants as of now but my history is very long of what my depression has been like and now I know how to deal with depression as well as I can I'm a pretty good at talking and realizing things will get better and my rationalizing is better I guess I could say I'm very confident in the surgery and super excited for all the new goals and determination I have to have for this I'm an all or nothing type of gal so I know once I dive in it won't be easy but so worth it and thank you for your kind words

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
