Southern Sweet tea!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

Oh God, I love it. Tell me to give up sodas-no prob. Sweet tea on the other hand is my issue. I went to a restaurant the other day that was self serve drinks and they had 3 tea urns. Yes, 3: Unsweet, Sweet, and Sweetest. What is this world comming to? It helps not being able to drink when eating, but I just can't give it up. I keep telling myself that I am just giving myself empty calories-and alot of them, but it is an addiction. I feel like a smoker who can't give up cigarrettes. I have tried using splenda and can't choke it down. Uggghhh! Just had to vent, thanks for listening!

Sweet tea is an addiction!! I have been having thoughts of it ever since I had my surgery.

There is a restaurant here who serves it with pellet ice...and it is soooo good. My problem has always been that I can't just drink 8oz of it, I drink like a gallon.

But now, instead I just get the unsweet and put splenda in it.

I know it's not the same, but it's a good substitute!

I always negotiate with myself... sweet tea or food? The food always wins over the drink in my case, lol. :)

I don't like splenda in my tea either.

I love sweet tea, but I find unsweet tea with Sweet-N-Low is just as satisfying for me.

Have you tried that?

I found in our local Walmart's here a sweet tea that is made with splenda and it is really good. It is made by Red Diamond and you buy it like milk you buy milk. I have had a hard time giving up regular pop and this has cured it big time.

Funny, several years ago I quit putting sugar in my coffee and started using a combination of Splenda and Equal. Now I can't stand it any other way. So I started trying to use Splenda in my tea (I'm a born and bred Southerner so your restaurant's Sweetest probably wouldn't be sweet enough for me). Hated it. I couldn't stand any cold drink that didn't have sugar in it. So when I tried to cut the sugar out I tried the same trick I use in my coffee - I mixed the Splenda and Equal...it worked! I use a 3:1 ratio of Splenda to Equal. Occasionally I'll add one part Sweet 'N Low to the mix and that's even better. Give it a try and see if it works for you...

MSDAD, I am interested in your "tea sweetening" technique. So lets say I have a normal restaurant size glass of Unsweet tea, how much of each should I put in? Do you use the packets or what? Every time I try getting unsweet and sweeten it with sweetnlow I put too much and its nasty. I am really thinking your method might work. I like hot tea with sweetnlow so I might like ice tea with the mix. Please let me know!

For a pitcher you need to use the Splenda/Equal that measures the same as sugar and just use 75% Splenda to 25% Equal. For a glass, I start out with 3 packets of Splenda and 1 packet of Equal. If that's not enough I just increase them one at a time. Since I don't drink with meals anymore (banded in May) I don't ever order tea (or anything else for that matter) when we eat out, so I don't remember how many it normally takes. Of course it also depends on just how sweet you like it... :peep:

Well, I have to say THANK YOU MSDAD! Your trick worked!!! You were right too, that mixing the splenda, sweetnlow, and equal was even better! I am proud and glad to say I am cured of my sweet tea adiction. For all sweet tea lovers who view this thread try MsDad's concotion. It is awsome. I don't think I will ever go back to old fashion sweet tea again!!!!! I can't thank you enough MsDad!

so to include sweet-n-low in the mix, in a glass of unsweet tea, what did you put packets wise?

I like sweet-n-low in tea just fine, but I'm always open to new things!

If I have say a 20oz glass I used a packet of splenda and half a packet of equal and half a packet of sweet n low. It is awsome!

White06 did you know that if you drink 2 large sweet teas from Mcdonalds alone you are adding aproximately 1100 extra calories to your daily intake. Probably a little more than that since that is a conservative estimate. Most sweet tea has more sugar calories than most sodas do. Please try this recipe the sweet tea is no good for you!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
