So I am 8 days post op and I'm really struggling! I feel like a failure, I can't get my Water in... I don't want to eat, but hungry at the same time... so when I do eat I feel nauseous. I keep reading stories of people trying new foods and throwing up and it's really scaring me because I don't want a life of vomiting all the time. I'm feeling a lot of regret.... just not in a good place mentally right now. Tomorrow is my first post op appointment and I'm scared of what the doctor is going to say about not getting my Water in. I know I am dehydrated.... it's been a struggle since I left the hospital. The only positive thing out of this so far is that I've lost 22lbs. Please just tell me it gets easier!! I broke down in tears earlier out of complete frustration... this is really hard!

I will tell you it gets so mush easier ! I'm on day 20 and it's only gotten easier since the day I left the hospital. I try new things and I've never vomited , but I will say everyone is different ! Yes Water intake is extremely hard but just try to sip sip sip all day long. You don't want to end up in the hospital because of dehydration.. that will only make you feel worse. And that's super amazing that you've already lost 22lbs!! I've only lost 27 , although I wish for it to be more, my time will come ! I'm here if you need to talk , I love having people to talk to ! I hope you start to feel better and realize that what you did is amazing , and that it will take time !! :-)

1st off don't feel like a failure!! I couldn't get my Water or my Protein in no matter how hard I tried. I am now 1 month post op and my Dr is very happy about my progress. Baby steps!! It's normal to have buyers remorse. I would throw up and was nauseous every day! Talk to your Dr about how you feel. She gave me an anti-nausea medication, carafate, and an acid reflux medication. It will be okay! I believe in you!!

You are not a failure. You've just had a major surgery and it will take time to adjust to the way your new life is going to be. I remember the first three months I struggled daily and flirted with dehydration quite often, especially when I returned to work as I found it difficult to get my Water intake in between customers. I am now 8 months post op and drinking is so much easier. I can now take three gulps of Water as opposed to sips, but if I take more than three I'm in trouble. You will learn your body's limits and tolerance as you go along, you just need to be patient, especially during the healing process. Good luck with your journey!

I had 2 serious meltdowns the first week and it was about 2 weeks before I stopped wishing I hadn't had surgery.

The beginning is HARD. You're still recovering, you're on liquids and many of us didn't get enough food/water. Your body is going through serious changes while still healing. You don't know if you're hungry or full and a lot of people are nauseous.

I personally have not vomited once since surgery. Just take it slow when you're trying new foods. Take a bite or two and see how it sits before you have a full "serving". You will be okay! It will only get easier starting soon!

For the nausea I bought some essential oils to smell right from the bottle. It helped me so much. It does get better. My nut and surgeon both said any liquid I ingest counts as liquids.

I found that mixing juice and Water half and half really helped...it seemed to go down easier than plain water. I still do it sometimes even tho I'm about 7 weeks out. You're doing great...and we all are here to support you.

The beginning is tough. I had to experiment to see what temp I could tolerate Water at. For a few days, it had to be luke warm. Then, it had to be very cold It was a moving target. The nausea could be from acid in your stomach. Are you taking a PPI or something like Protonix or Nexium? Ask your team about that. I think at about week 2, I was demoralized. But remember - your body has been through a huge trauma with the surgery. Be kind to yourself. Your emotions are going to be all over the place for a while, too. You can do this.

Thank you all so much for the words of encouragement! I am feeling a little better today but just can't wait to feel "normal" again. I have a slow release omeprazole but it says not to crush or chew on the box.

You are not a failure. 8 days is a very short time and you are still healing. You're emotional and your body is recovering, which is normal. You're not at your best. But you will be! You will figure out how to adjust Water and Protein. You will re-learn how to eat right. You will find that, if you stick with your program, you'll see success when you may have never seen weight loss/management success before. Your doctor isn't there to punish you if you can't drink enough Water, but to help you stay hydrated so that your body can function; I don't know what your intake goal is, but be assured that you will gradually be able to drink enough and consume enough Protein. Hang in there. While you have doubts now, it's definitely worth it.

I really needed to read this. I'm only 3 days post op (had surgery on Monday 1/16) and I've regretted the surgery every day. Even seeing the weight loss is not even exciting. I hate not being able to drink as much Water as I want. I'm not even in much pain anymore but the esophageal spasms and gas are just regular annoyances that are so ongoing that they've made this almost intolerable.

Getting my Gatorade and Protein shakes in have been a serious struggle too. I think I'm doing just enough to stave off dehydration but I'm one of those people that when they don't feel 100% it seems like it's the end of the world. I guess I'm just too impatient to get to the point where I feel normal again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
