Kombucha or no?

Recommended Posts

I don't drink soda but I do love kombucha. Because it's a fizzy drink, best to stay away with the sleeve??? Anyone further out in the journey who drink them with no problems? Or shall I say bye already?

WHAT IS Kambucha?[

Here is how google describes it. Kombucha is a variety of fermented, lightly effervescent sweetened black or green tea drinks that are commonly intended as functional beverages for their supposed health benefits. Kombucha is produced by fermenting tea using a "symbiotic 'colony' of bacteria and yeast.

It's basically a fermented, fizzy drink that health food stores carry. Really tasty and supports digestive health but it is carbonated.

Thanks for your replies. I have a feeling I may be throwing it out of my diet for good. Since I posted this question, I asked the nutritionist. She says I could have it IF I were to let it sit for about 15 mins first (I guess let the fizzies go down?) but I like the fizzy, it's a great alternative to soda and sooo much healthier.

Guess I'll enjoy what I can until my pre-op diet.

I made kombucha Jello post-op. And (at 4 months out) drink small amounts of it. I pour it pretty vigorously, let it sit for a few minutes, then sip slowly. Wait a minute. Take another sip. It's still a touch fizzy . I maybe drink a half cup total?

I was also REALLY careful about waiting a long time to reintroduce it (past the 3 month mark) and then taking it super slow. Like, take a sip, wait 20 minutes. Watch the sugar content, too - the Probiotics are great, but the carbs can also mess you up. I did talk to my NUT about it, in case anyone was wondering.

If you just want flavor, there are stevia Water drops, herbed teas, and all kinds of things I didn't like much before. Right now I'm really liking the Ultima grape hydration packets, real lime blackberry limeade, and blueberry green iced tea. . Apparently it's a purple month...

Jello? Never heard of it that way. Something for me to think about. Thanks!

Wow - that update ate some text! Well, OP already knows what I said about waiting 3 months and trying very small half flat sips for the Probiotics. And talking to my NUT. And waiting like, a half hour between sips. Oh - and being really careful of the carbs - some are way more sweetened than others.

As for the Jello, some of the paleo crew make kombucha gummies for the probiotics. You might want to check those out - Gelatin and kombucha probiotics are a powerful gut health combo. I just made very weak jello post-op using Great Lakes gelatin dissolved in Water and then whisked into some flat kombucha. It was okay - I really, REALLY would not risk any carbonation right after surgery. I keep meaning to try some newer versions just for the jello and general gut health aspect, but haven't gotten around to it.

Do you like kefir? The stuff in the states has had the carbonation killed off, but I did drink unsweetened kefir with a couple drops of flavored stevia post-op. Again, mostly for the probiotics. But it's not a bad yogurt drink, either. I have never been an unsweetened person, but tastes change and post-op, the sweet leaf berry stevia drops are pretty good.

I want to say I've had kefir before, but I just don't recall. Thanks for the info on the gummies, I'll look into those too. I only really started drinking kombucha for the gut health. I was having a lot of trouble with my digestive system when I started and found them to really help, the taste was great too (certain brands). I'm going to look up the gummies. I would rather just stay away from carbonation altogether after surgery anyhow. Thank you again!!

If you leave it out for a while or stir it, will it go flat?

I just poured 8 oz out and beat the hell out of it with a whisk. Add a splash of lime juice. No more bubbles. Left the bottle in frig in opened. I don't seem to be having much problem.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
