Purchasing Insurance Program outside of my employer.

Recommended Posts

Okay, I have a second question tonight, as I cant sleep and my stomach is tied up in knots thinking about the prospect of having to lose another 6 months of my 20's on a diet that more than likely wont work.

Has anyone gone out and purchased an insurance plan outside of their employer to have the procedure approved? Is anyone aware of how I can find information about these programs, and the estimated costs of them? Can anyone provide any suggestions as to what insurance company would be the best so that I can avoid this 6 month merry go round?

Thanks again.

Hi Angelica,

You need to check what the regulations are in your state before considering this option. In many states, individuals aren't even eligible for insurance if they are eligible for group plans through their employers. And even if you are, it's highly unlikely that you'll be able to purchase insurance that is *better* than what's offered by your employer. In general, group plans offer better benefits at more reasonable prices than individual plans.

Alexandra knows her stuff.

I was able to beat an exclusion by purchasing a moderately priced insurance plan to replace the plan I had from my employer. I don't have very good coverage with this new plan but it did cover the band for me.

The new company required a 6 month diet. I'm in NY.

You can check ehealthinsurance.com but I'm thinking your best bet is to suck it up and do the 6 month diet. It will go by quickly. Get started on it NOW. You'll be pre-occupied with other pre-op tests anyway. :heh: I had well over 20 doctor visits including blood work, shrink, nutritionist and sleep studies.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
